Beverly man pleads guilty to molesting child

SALEM — A Beverly man has been sentenced to up to 3½ years in prison after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a Peabody boy numerous times when he was between the ages of 6 and 8.

Prosecutors called the actions of 31-year-old Shawn Finnegan "despicable, horrific and unimaginable" in Salem Superior Court on Monday.

Prosecutors say Finnegan was a clean-cut professional mortgage broker who befriended the boy’s older sister and his troubled family, posing as a mentor. He began inviting the boy to spend nights at his apartment, where he would molest the boy, now 11.

The Salem News reports that Finnegan’s defense lawyer asked for a lighter sentence because her client had no prior record and was taking responsibility for his actions.

Cops do their job, put together a case, the DA does his/her job, makes the case to the jury and then the judge slaps him on the wrist.

If the guy pleaded there was no jury. The da would have had to agreed to the deal. Either they're too unsure of their case or the plea is a cost/benefit calculation.

You also don't know what's up with the da - resources, bigger cases, lazy or a desire to spare the victim and his family a trial.

Without going into specifics, knowing folks who dealt with this guy, he is more the poster child for the subprime crisis. Not surprised his shady dealings went deeper than lending money.

We should import "Old Sparky" into MA, and just fry every single confessed and proven guilty child diddler. It is not the death penalty, it is electro shock therapy, because every one deserves to have a chance to change their ways. It would just be another level of help we could dish out, hell, I would be willing to pay the electric bill for it if they would. I say, throw the switch, if the guy survives past the 10 second mark, then I bet he would change his ways, those who don't, were not going to change, and we did a service to the state and all the children. And this would be for the children.

A look at the Level III list will make you puke...The sentences they receive are ludicrous. There's one scumbag that had multiple counts of sexual assault on his own daughter, (I think 20 counts) and he served 2-years. The marijuana dealer in the cell next door must have been really stoked that he got 10 for selling grass...
