I recently purchased a brand new 10/22, and started looking around for nifty ways to modify it. I have a feeling I'm gonna get 'Scrivenered' sooooo hard for this one (I did a cursory search, I swear!) but: are adjustable (not telescoping) stocks with a thumbhole, like the Fajen Legacy, MA-legal, providing the barrel is greater than 16"?

If not, how about the legality of a non-adjustable thumbhole stock like this one from Cabelas? My understanding of the MA AWB is that all its little nit-picky rules still apply even though it's "only" a rimfire .22, although I would *love* to be corrected if this isn't the case.

I'm 99% sure the MA AWB rules apply to the lowly .22LR as well. My understanding is that would make adjustable stocks right out, I haven't read enough to comment on the thumbhole stock.

not to hijack, but does anyone know if all 10/22 stocks are universal? will a sporter stock fit on a carbine action/barrel?

I believe that they are pretty much interchangeable.... The one thing you have to watch out for is barrel diameter. Some stocks are designed for standard factory profile barrels and some are designed for .920 bull barrels.
A stock designed for the bull will probably be ok with the stock profile barrel. However, a stock designed for the standard profile will most likely not work with a bull barrel.

yeah, aside from a bull barrel issue... would a deluxe sporter stock fit a carbine action if both were standard set ups? I'd like to actually know before I buy.

That's an adjustable not a collapsible/folder, so you should be fine. That's built like a PRS is (which is generally considered to be exempt) so I don't think it counts as an "evil feature. "

the Fajen Legacy stock comes on new 10/22's in ma so you are good to go with one. i have the non-adjustable version of it myself.

drgrant, I thought it was the adjustable feature of a stock that made it an evil feature. Otherwise, why pin adjustable AR stocks?

Collapsible =/= adjustable.

A collapsible stock is one where you loosen it, slide it to the position you want it in, and then fix it in place...however your particular mechanism works for that. An adjustable stock is apparently one where you can continuously adjust the position of the stock without ever letting it move freely.

Most AR stocks are collapsible, not adjustable. I think, although I'm not positive, that a stock that requires a tool to loosen it so that you can adjust it freely and then lock it back down, is considered adjustable and not collapsible.

Confusing? Yeah, a little. Absolutely ridiculous that it's come to this? Definitely.

Note: Neither one causes the same level of pants-wetting that the dreaded "shoulder thing that goes up" does. [wink]
