just got my brand new unfired 10/22 and as I am going over the gun I notice that there is a bare metal spot showing through the black finish on the inside of the receiver, so I scrubbed it w/ a toothbrush for about 10 minutes until I was sure that no more flakes were coming off. I ended up w/ an inch and a half long by 1/4 inch wide strip that had flaked off. Is it normal for the finish to flake off like this? will this effect the functioning of the rifle? should I call ruger (bought it @ dick's, so i'm not even going to bother calling them)? Am I being anal? should I fire it a bit and see what happens?

If it is really bad, I would call Ruger. If it were mine, I would shoot it like crazy and not worry a bit as long as the flaking is not on the outside.

Mine seems to have a 'lacquer' like finish on the inside of the receiver that isn't very 'durable'. Mine started coming off in some sections after cleaning. I basically just tried to get it all off and not worry about it.

I only had my 10/22 for a short while, but it started flaking at the same spot pretty much from brand new. I suspect it's pretty normal. Didn't much concern me.

Mine did the same thing, by now I have barely any finish inside of the receiver remaining. I wouldn't worry about it, just make sure when you clean it you get as much of the flaking crap out.

My 10/22T has the same "flaking" paint inside the receiver, it was a mess at first but most has seemed burnt off by now. I've never had a function problem with this rifle btw.
One of these days I going to get in there with the rototool and remove all that remains.....
