I boogered the elevation screw on my 1911. The screw has a very narrow slit and it took a lot of torque to turn it. Doh! It is not terrible, but it bugs me.

I have a replacement screw now and am wondering how to remove the old one. I don’t see any way to crack into the sight.. so do I just keep unscrewing it? Are there any detents or springs that will go flying?

Also, where can I buy a wide 5/32 bit so that I don’t mess up the new one?

A Chapman rep had an account here. Here is a good thread on bits and drivers.

ETA: @ChapmanMFG but they haven't been around. They know about NES.

Good luck. Matt

There should be one or two small springs under the rear sight that may fall out when you remove the elavation screw. If it's a bomar site I believe the elevation screw also holds the sight on to the frame. That sight also has a small spring keeping tension on the elevation screw your trying to remove to watch out for
