When did they start making Commander sizes, and did they stamp that onto the gun?

I got to shoot a 1911 today, IIRC it was marked 1914 on the slide, but my friend said 1918. Maybe I read it wrong or something. But it was not an A1 model, this was older than that, and I don't recall seeing "Commander" stamped on it.. Going by my eyeballs it looked like a 4" barrel, but, like I implied, never handled a 1911 before, so I'm clueless, and was never good at estimation. I'm curious, as I thought it had a bit of muzzle flip to it, more than I was expecting. But I found I liked shooting it, so I'm thinking I want to read up on them more.

Blast it all! Can a mod retitle this thread--1911 not 1991. I am such a noob...

Colt made the first "Commanders" were made in the early 1950's. Now that being said, if it was a home grown 1911, the frames between the Government and the Commanders is the same, so the frame of the gun you shot could be as old as 1911, but the 4.25" barrel length wasn't introduced until the early 50's.

Asked my friend (via email, hence the delay) and he said it's a regular 'ole government. My mistake, been looking too long at my snubby revolvers I guess.

Thanks.
