Hello everyone, im bored and waiting on parts. None of my friends are into firearms and i wanted to show people my ar. It is a 1992 olympic arms ar15. Im from MA and i wanted an unrestricted ar (besides nfa and such of course) the quality isnt really there but im kind of new to the ar platform. I wanted a shooter with all the " evil" features. Here it is now. I am waiting on a vortex sparc 2, daniel defense furniture package (stock, fore grip and pistol grip) i also ordered a cheap quad rail.

I ordered the cheap rail because im not really sure if i want to rid the carry handle flat top it and mlok it. I do like the looks of the whole hidden block and rail out to the end of barrel but the carry handle is so classic.

Thanks guys. Have fun!

O yea heres a pic of a crap optic i tried. I stole it off my sons .22. I wasnt sure if i could get an optic on it without looking silly but i think the vortex will look ok. 20190623_170217.jpg 20190608_211836.jpg

Looks great.
Tough to get a cheek weld with a carry handle mounted optic.
they do make a snap on cheek piece for that type of stock if you decide to go in that direction.
I have an armson OEG red dot on my carry handle preban, its period correct and I like the look.
Im thinking of having the barrel cut down and having a flash hider pinned and welded so it looks more authentic and I can put a bayonet on it.

Nice rifle! Carry handle + optic is not my cup of tea, but to each their own.

Side note; take your friends shooting! They will be into guns on no time :)

Good thing is its 1992 so you can go in any direction you want.
Now as far as running optics. Old School gets old quick.
Now what i would do running a small red dot?
Go flat top , no frills round Free float tube long enough to only let the muzzle stick out. Make sure the free float fits over the gas block. Barrel ? Im partial to heavier barrels with out muzzle devices. ...heck i would be tempted to NFA also.

Period correct optics on a carry handle sounds kind of cool. I wish i had more money! I could try to keep it authentic and then build a practical shooter. I think i will eventually go flat top and free float. Thanks for the interest. I should be getting parts today so ill update. I got my license a little over a year ago and have 7 firearms now. Its like a drug! Thanks again guys n gals!

There is a Colt carry handle scope in the classifieds that has been bumped like 6,000 times..

Im not sure how i feel about the stock right now but im happy with everything else. Should get a couple hundred rounds in this evening. Stock feels good but just looks like to much. Im sorry but im one of those that cares about how the rifle looks. Much more practical and feels good though! And thanks0 for the0 replys! If i had another rifle id look into keeping this one period correct but right now its my only one so im goimg to make it a shooter.

Old school carry handle = no optic.

That's just how it should be. Mainly because optics sit WAAAAYYYYYY too high on a carry handle. Even with a "delta" style cheek piece. It just sucks.

I don't car how old you are. You can shoot an iron sight gun. Use the small aperture. I'm 51 and shoot irons with no problem. A small aperture helps to bring the front sight into focus.

p.s. Years ago I also bought a pre-ban OLympic mainly for the lower. It was a "good one". Olympics were very inconsistent with quality. Some were spot on. Others were off to the point where triggers would get wonky because the holes were drilled wrong. The upper was an absolute tack driver. But I sold it anyway.

Put 210 rounds through it today. Shot very well. The stock is a little aggresive on my pocket but i think i have a little sunburn. The vertical grip has alot of flex in it which i dont care for. I herd anybody serious about shooting should always avoid the plastic ones. Not sure why i didnt listen!!

exactly what happens when you have only one AR and some parts kicking around. If for anything but looks....it looks wrong with the A1 upper receiver and the more modern stuff on it.
I have seen stripped M4 upper receiver blems for as little as $25 they would go good with those modern parts in the dido thing that goes down
poking around I have found some decent prices on complete M4 style uppers in many flavors for around $350
If you like some of the budget vendors I seen some complete flat tops for $175

Thought id try to get some opinions. Im pretty sure its complete now. I like the solid quad rail. Its a midlength gas system on a 16" barrel. That way i could make the rail a few inches longer and pep down the recoil impulse. Let me know what you guys think and maybe post some pics of your quad rail builds. These are the changes in order. 20190608_211836.jpg 20191111_160728.jpg 20200208_142331.jpg 20200306_203235.jpg

i like picture 1 and 4 . if it where mine i would make that A1 upper retro - 20" barrel , A1 handguards and if you really want to go old school A1 retro Scope.

I love the old school AR style with the barrel handguard and carry handle. I have 3 of them, but I also have flat tops that see more use than the classic variants I have.

I just finished putting a carry handle upper together, wanted a good one w/ a 16 inch barrel so basically had to assemble it. Spikes/FN chf chrome lined barrel in mid, spikes bcg, rock river upper, aero ambi ch, magpul furniture... when my FAB Defense TFL shows up it will get a forward grip and I'll be done with it. Snapped it on a Stag lower for now.

The lure of this is you have a solid iron sight rifle with a usable carry handle. Once you go putting a red dot on it I think it ruins it - would be better off getting a flat top upper and gas block with a rail on it, and/or a free float handguard - that is better for optics.
