Two NYPD police officers were shot Friday afternoon responding to a home invasion in the Bronx, a source told FoxNews.com.

The two police officers were rushed to nearby Jacobi Medical Center. One officer was shot in the head and the other shot in the leg, according to the police source. The gunman was killed in the exchange, a source told The New York Daily News.

The shooting reportedly occured at around 3 p.m.

Update:

Two NYPD cops were shot — one in the head — while responding to a home-invasion call in The Bronx on Friday afternoon, law-enforcement sources said.

The officer shot in the head, a sergeant, was in extremely critical condition, sources said.The other officer was shot in the leg.

Suspect Manuel Rosales, 35, of Brentwood on Long Island, was shot dead in the confrontation, sources said.

The shootings took place near 1460 Beach Ave. in a residential neighborhood in the Van Nest section after the officers pulled over a car that was linked to the burglary, law-enforcement sources said.
Sources said Rosales knew the woman who lived there.

Both officers were rushed to Jacobi Hospital, where the blood bank had been notified that they could need transfusions.
