I would like to get a 20 gauge semi automatic to do some bird hunting this year. Can anyone recommend some good models? I don't mind spending a little more if it is worth it.

My family bought a Benelli/Franchi from Dick's last month. Very nice looker and shooter, $900.

The Beretta 391 is what I use personally and it's perfection in a semi-auto in my eyes, but may cost a little bit more.

At the low end of the price spectrum is the Winchester Model 140. I have one that I was lucky to pick up in a ... distress sale ... for short money.

I think you can find them around for $250 or so. Good, practical gun, and you won't feel too terribly bad if you drop it in the mud. Not something you'd shoot in competition, though.

I gotta question......

Why a 20?

If you're thinking the 20 has less recoil it usually does not. The 20's tend to be a little lighter and do not soak up as much recoil as a 12.

The 20 is not cheaper to shoot or have as many different loadings available.

There are probably more 12's out there used and you can get one for a better price than a 20 if you buy used.

Of course, YMMV.

Hope that helps,

I bought a Benelli Supersport 2, 20 guage before last season. I figured I could hunt and shoot clay with it. I was looking for an M2 Field, but this was so beautiful I couldn't resist. I use both 20 and 12 guage. The supersport 2 is very light and looks awesome. It still kicks pretty good, though. I think I paid around $1800 with tax!
