2018 / 2019 Winter Warrior Postal Match

Target 1 90/2X 91/30
Target 2 100/5X Swiss K31- Disclaimer target is not correct size. Its close but the X is a bit bigger than a SR1

Target 1 mosin 91/30

MqKOqkHm.jpg

Ammo ended up being full loads. Im glad I made a custom fatter front sight for this. Although I now want to make a square post as all but the Arisaka and K98 have square posts. Still shoots a tad high even with the really tall sight. Im about done with the 91/30 If I come across a good deal on some .312" bullets like sierra or lapua I might revisit.

Target #2 Swiss K31
HCb3AjTm.jpg

I installed the fattest front sight I could find for this rifle and it really helps. Just need to tap the front sight a tad more right. I am glad I shot the K31 first. By the time I finished the 10 shots my eyes where struggling on that rear sight. The mosin was laughable, even harder to see than the K31

I wish I snagged a few K31 when they where still under $300 just a solid rifle. Just need those target apertures now or a scope.....maybe CMP can have a unlimited vintage match or some sort of almost a sniper class where scopes do not have to be correct ?

Cool , I brought a bucket of snow with me Incase there is non at the range
[rofl]

Still plenty here, and not even the stuff piled up at the end of the parking lot. Anything shaded from a southern exposure still holding snow.

Hey, if there's snow somewhere on your range, even a pile of snit in the parking lot- it counts.

This was the best of 5 targets at 200 yards from yesterday shooting varying powder weights of Varget in the M1 (45.3gr here). 168gr A-Max projectiles.

Target 2: 97-2x

43D5373A-7E1F-4307-B311-A444E5DE0A90.jpeg

This was the best of 4 targets from today after work, shooting even smaller increments of powder weights (44.7gr here, which may be my sub-freezing load of choice). Same projectile. Notice the cold bore shot (CB). This was my third target, and it had just started snowing. By the fourth target, it was a literal blizzard, and I could only just make out the black through 200 yards of fat flakes. Now I just need to adjust my center hold down slightly, and it's X city (yeah, right).

The inch measurements are for my use. I typically throw out any cold bore or flyers (two measurements is that decision-making process going on in my head slower than my hands are writing it down). I have a huge pile of targets now (I had shot 5 groups of 10 the weekend before) with all sorts of scribbles and notes on them. Currently missing my shot cards and firing data booklets from my other life.

Target 1: 86-1x
Target 2: 90-2x

1917.jpg

One last shot at majspud's World War One title.
Using 168gr necksized HXP with IMR4895.

t1.jpg

I should have used some sighters; got off to a bad start low left.

Target 2 was better but I had one called flyer top left; if I had demonstrated some more visual patience and turned that 8 into a 10, I could have tied at 92:

t2.jpg

Very nice day outside for it and I was the only one there for a change, and I remembered my boots for the mud.

Can't go tomorrow so this will do it for me for the contest.

Thanks again to Mountain for running this.
My shooting is going to have no motivation now! Picking a rifle each week and shooting a target or two has been a nice routine this winter.
I already have about 10 targets printed up for next year.

44.5 grains varget has been my best load for years. 155 and 168s in the 06 garand

Dang. Looks like I'll be out of time to add any more submissions this season! Today is the last day of winter, all the snow has melted around here and I don't foresee it dropping below freezing on any weekend days from here on. It's been real folks! Catch you on the next one. Hopefully next year I'll have more time to do this but who am I kidding... there's another baby coming soon! ;)

Güd...counting on this for the death rattle of my match entries tonight/tomorrow (equinox doesn’t officially occur until 5:58pm tomorrow, so i’ll be milking the clock, as per the usual.)

Will you be sacrificing target pasters for the equinox? [devil2]

The two swans have returned to the pond next to my gym in Braintree. Spring is officially here, at least for me.

Thanks for putting this thing together Mountain!

Welcome! Always fun to do, and great participation this winter. I'm a complete nut for winter. By far, it is my favorite season since moving to New England. Running this thing is a way for at least a handful of people to not completely hate me for that, LOL.

A team of accountants are beginning to tally the results, though not officially over until all snow is gone from the range parking lot piles or when I arbitrarily decide it's over. :)

90/0X

This is from last night. Ordered a ‘new old stock’ front sight post for my well worn war time Sako M39. Figured I’d take it out to test POA v. POI and I think it was an overall success! I was unfortunately battling light conditions and shot much better on my ‘sight in’ rounds but neglected to photograph my target.

Shooting again with that Ruag 174gr and i’m really thinking i’m going to be keeping my eyes open for more of it I’ve been so impressed with its performance.

I knew all about that pulled shot to the right at 3 o clock, but really wasn’t too aware of the 3 that hit low. Regardless, not too shabby for a hundred year old rifle...and definitely more fun to shoot now that I’m relatively ‘in the wheelhouse’ of POA/POI at 100yds.

If everything works out today, I SHOULD be able to make it out after work for a special Versus Round to cap off the season. The final countdown is underway, but I have til 5:58pm to go cold and plan on beating Mac’s 100 5X into last Tuesday (with my handy #2 pencil, it’s still technically lead hitting paper.)

Took the ‘55 to play and the 1915 Colt with that new Federal carry ammo. Antique car thermometer said 40F from the unheated garage. Windy, swinging targets, snow on the ground. Didn’t like the ammo; harsh biting recoil, shot high, and left brass bits in the action. 55 and 52. Only 20 rounds/box. You can see that I was on target the last few on the right.

Those rounds are gonna be snappy in any .380. The gun functions nicely with them though? If you can afford to, buy a few more boxes and see if there’s no failures of any kind. I use that very same ammo in the rare occasion I’m carrying a .380 these days. It’s good stuff.

What are you planning for optics, big magX or little combat style?
Where is the best point to put the front sling swivel? I'm trying to avoid the gas block as I wouldn't want there to be too much heat. Right now I mounted it just behind the gas block, but now I'm thinking in front of the gas block close to the muzzle.

I have another websling on the way. I'm thinking if the swivel is too close to the magwell, it won't work correctly. When I put the AR side by side with the M1, the M1's swivel is, of course, right about where the gas block is.

Wasn't sure if there was any kind of consensus. Since the mount is m-lok I can just move it and screw it in.
Maybe just guess and test. Was going to bring it as my backup for the Appleseed next month, in case the 10/22 fails and/or if we go to 200 yards.

I'm still liking the Liberty; most cavitation/internal damage per Lucky Gunner videos...and has minimal recoil...easy to keep on target.

You have the liberty of adjustment. Set up prone and see where you hand naturally sits. Sling swivel just forward of that.

The 22 can go to 200, as long as you have enough sight adjustment.

Went out again with the 1915 M14 Mauser in 7,65mm. Range flooded, 38F, drizzle, miserable. Luckily there was another shooter there with better footwear who set my targets and brought them in.

Three types of ammo...left to right...all functioned/cycled perfectly.

PPU 71gr JHP, 902/128
Hornady 60gr JHP, 1000/133
Fiochhi 73gr FMJ-RN, 980/155

Score don't signify, as the range was 75 feet on a 50 foot target...but 48/63/46.

LOL, I just noticed that you (at least temporarily) are using the crayon eater as an avatar! [rofl][rofl][rofl]

In any case, WINTER WARRIOR 2018/2019 IS OFFICIALLY CLOSED!

Please be patient- may take me a while to go through the results and set up the random drawing for the 'fabulous' prizes.

Got some of the Winchester TD in .38 Special....130gr JHP....will try it out TH. According to the Lucky Gunner ballistics tests, this ammo expands from .357 to an average of .69 inches....top 3 in that regard.

Looks like a non-black 'Black Talon'. Should be great SD ammo.

Well folks, looks like I’m in an appropriate place to wrap this up:

V7EnYBb.jpg

Amateur ski racing nationals at Squaw Valley. At the summit, 107 mph winds last night. Still 20’ of snow on the upper mountain. I raced like crap yesterday, did better today.

So...

Over 110 entries!

Winner random drawing is Majspud. Send me an address to mail the goods or meet me in the Worcester area or at a future Old Colony match if you want the enblocs filled with HXP.

Top official score???

97-4 shot by 76Too or whoever is that good shooting alien body snatcher.
