It's that time of year again.

I went out to fish today because I was bored and I had a new travel rod I wanted to try out. I bought a St Croix 4 piece travel rod and a Shimano Stradic C14. It fits in my suitcase so when I work out of stste I can bring it with me.

I put on a whopper plopper because bass are still slow biting and the place I was, was shallow and weedy. I was hoping to maybe catch a pickerel since they will take top water lures this time of year. My first cast I caught a Largemouth Bass which surprised me. It hit the lure 3 times on the retrieve before it got hooked. It didn't smash the lure, just kind of slurped at it. It was 2 1/2 lbs.

Then I caught a Pike on the 3rd cast. It hit the lure slow also, but a little more forceful than the bass. It weighed 5 1/4 lbs and was 30".

Went out a couple weeks ago because the river was clear of ice. Then it wasn’t, lol. The river rose 6 inches n minutes and the water was choked with icebergs ranging from refrigerator sized to room sized.
No fish but it was absolutely cool to watch.

Getting my Assawompsett sticker on Saturday. :). The boat could be in by the 17th. Yikes. I need to go get a new battery! And a new drain plug. (I've got 2 that are pretty dry-rotted and leak a tad.)

I've never fished this early except from shore. Probably just anchor out from the dam. Tough time of year. It's herring season. So any bass worth it's salt is sitting around waiting for a fish 1/4 the size of it to just jump into their mouths. You'll SEE a lot of fish but they are barely hungry. But still worth a try.

Good friend of mine had to get away due to some serious marital discord...His BIL and I put together a quick trip to Puerto Vallarta....Fished three full days on 28’ boat with 26 year old captain from Montreal.....Man did he put us on fish! We ate fish every night, early dinner, late dinner...Red snapper, grouper, bonito and I even had the chance to scoop a big net full of Calimari out of the Pacific....! Great trip....

Opening day was today. I went out at 7:00 and there were a few people at the pond I went to. Everyone there caught something. One guy gave two away to another guy so he left because he had 3 already and 5 is the limit. I declined one because I wanted to fish longer.
I tried lures, but had no luck with them so I went to the bait shop and grabbed some worms. Went back and let the fun begin. I actually caught 6 fish, but when I was putting one on the stringer he flipped out of my hand and went back into the water. I caught my limit in about an hour after I got the worms.
One guy was there for a while using lures and caught nothing. I gave him some worms so he could catch something. He said a friend was coming later and was bringing him some worms, but I gave him some of mine.

My smallest one was 12". It was the last one I caught. The one I dropped was also 12". I'm going back out in the morning. They were all 12-16".

Oh not that boat. My old Jon.

I got the SunTracker 16 pontoon. Ended up at Bub's. The old man has really softened a ton. In fact, he's taken a severe back seat to his son (who is no spring chicken himself).

They treated me well. Boat should be here middle of next month and then in the water shortly thereafter.

Funny is I got in early on the Tracker. Plus BPS moved a TON of production out of Jon boats and other items to maximize pontoon production BEFORE Covid. By mid-March, they had sold the entire lot of 2020 boats. All of them. If you didn't have an order placed, you aren't getting a boat this year. Just wow.

Hey all, what do you suggest for a decent salt water shore/beach fishing set up? My son is finally old enough to where I think I could bring him with me so I'm finally going to pull the trigger this year on some new gear. I've never done any serious saltwater fishing so I'm not really sure where to begin. I went to Bass Pro recently and the guy was suggesting an eleven foot pole, which looked nice (about $170) but to be honest I don't really trust their sales guys. Any advice would be appreciated!

Will you be using bait or just lures? I’ve been using a Cabelas salt striker bait runner for a few years with a 9’ ugly stick. Reel and rod was about $150. It casts well with 30’ braid.

I was thinking of using frozen shrimp, I've heard good things about them and that its easier for beginners.

No pic but my first time out in the Ware River watershed today got me a baby pick. I also picked up my first tick too, lol. It’s always good to check yourself after a woods walk.

I alway keep a set of clothing treated with permethrin for time out doors. It isn’t worth the risk. Hoping to hit Quabbin with my dad next week when it warms up enough for him.

I've already had about a dozen and 3 have bitten me. I'm a tick magnet. I can't seem to find my can of Permethrin anywhere. It's a brand new can too.

I have treated clothes but they are my hunting clothes more suited for autumn. I’m just lazy to treat another set with my Sawyers. I have to do it though since I trek into deep woods quite a bit.

How often do y'all retreat your stuff with permethrin? The packaging says up to 6 weeks...are you actually treating your clothes 8 or 9 times a year?

Once a month. I mix my own from concentrate so it’s pretty inexpensive.

Bob
So you buy a (quickly googles...e.g. 1.25 gallon at 36.8%) bottle, mix with water in a spray bottle...and profit? Nice. Do you have a preferred source? The first couple hits I'm finding say "not for clothes, " though that could be due to concentration.

No particular retailer. I just shop around and see who is cheapest. IIRC the last one came from Amazon. I buy a quart of 36.6%. Tractor Supply stocks he permethrin but I‘m not close to one.

For the last several years my son an I have been going to the Quabbin and renting one of the little motor boats at Area 1. They discontinued it last year due to Covid but it looks like rentals are available this year! Looking forward to renewing an annual outing. He's back from college late May so looking at early June.

Hattrick this am to my surprise...brookies! on a fly line.
Little trolling and stripping. Takes a while to figure out what works.
