JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — Six people, including a police officer and three bystanders, were killed in a furious gun battle Tuesday that filled the streets of Jersey City with the sound of heavy fire for hours, authorities said.

The dead included the two gunmen, Jersey City Police Chief Michael Kelly said.

The slain officer, Detective Joseph Seals, 40, was credited by his superiors with having led the department in the number of illegal guns removed from the streets in recent years, and might have been trying to stop an incident involving such weapons when he was cut down by gunfire that erupted near a cemetery, authorities said.

The shooting then continued at a kosher supermarket about a mile away, where five more bodies were found, Kelly said.

“It’s a really tough day for the city of Jersey City,” Mayor Steven Fulop said. Seals “was one of the best officers for getting the most guns off the streets. He was a good cop.”

Two other officers were wounded but were later released from the hospital, authorities said.

The bullets started flying early in the afternoon in the city of about 270,000 people, situated across the Hudson River from New York City. Seals, who worked for a unit called Cease Fire, was shot around 12:30 p.m. The gunmen then drove a stolen rental van to another part of the city and engaged police in a lengthy shootout.

Kelly said when police responded to the area of the kosher store, officers “were immediately engaged by high-power rifle fire.”

Kosher Market ???
When I was hearing the radio news reports this afternoon, they kept referring to it as a "Bodega".
Could it be a Kosher Bodega run by Spanish Jews ??? [thinking]

They shouldn't even report these damn stories until they have facts, Fox wasn't naming the streets and made a big deal about it( I guess it was because it was on MLK jr. blvd) and then a reporter comes on and the 1st thing he did was mention the street. They had people leaping from rooftops to escape, it was just silly reporting.

Jersey City shootout: Mayor says kosher deli was ‘targeted’ by gunmen

Dec. 11, 2019 at 9:33 a.m. EST
The two suspects who engaged in a deadly, hours-long gun battle with law enforcement at a kosher deli in Jersey City appear to have targeted the grocery store, the city’s mayor said early Wednesday.
A review of security footage from the store during the Tuesday-afternoon shooting that left five people dead, including the two suspects, made it “clear” that the gunmen chose the Jewish establishment, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop (D) said on Twitter.
“I’m Jewish and proud to live in a community like Jersey City that has always welcomed everyone,” Fulop wrote on Twitter. “It is the home of Ellis Island and has always been the golden door to America. Hate and anti-semitism have never had a place here in JC and will never have a place in our city.”

Authorities are still investigating and have not indicated a motive for the attack, which unsettled the growing community of Orthodox Jews in Jersey City. Before the mayor’s Wednesday tweets, investigators had said the store was chosen at random and was not indicative of a hate crime.

Jersey City Shooting: Suspect Published Anti-Semitic Posts, Official Says
The firefight that left six people dead is believed to have been motivated by anti-Semitic and anti-police sentiments, an official said.

A suspect involved in a prolonged firefight in Jersey City, N.J., that left six people dead, including one police officer, had published anti-Semitic and anti-police posts online and investigators believe the attack was motivated by those sentiments, a law enforcement official familiar with the case said on Wednesday.

Investigators also found a manifesto-style note inside the attackers’ van, the law enforcement official and another official familiar with the case said.
The document, which was described as brief and “rambling,” suggested no clear motive for the shooting. Investigators also found a live pipe bomb inside the vehicle, the law enforcement official said.

The Jersey City mayor, Steven Fulop, also said Wednesday that surveillance footage indicated the two assailants had targeted a kosher supermarket where most of the carnage unfolded.

Mr. Fulop said the footage revealed that after shooting the detective in the earlier encounter, the assailants slowly drove to the market.

Unfortunately, most people don't understand the differences between military and law enforcement. They are very different charters and pictures like these further confuse the picture. Another shot showed an armored vehicle - I mean really? Are police trying to take Fallujah?

No one likes to see anyone gunned down be it a cop or a civilian but shit happens. And by the way THAT WAS HIS JOB THAT HE SIGNED UP FOR he was not appointed...Cancer kills people everyday why is it not on the news? Why you feel we must have special drawing rights as to who gets noticed or recognized when death comes knocking is beyond me.

Some people did something.

Exactly, this is Jersey City not Fallujah! For Fallujah, they wouldnt need as much armor and firepower.

"War On Drugs" and "War On Terrorism" bullshit enabled all that garbage. Otherwise bearcats etc wouldn't be a "thing". People bray about the Military Industrial complex, well, there's also a Law Enforcement Industrial Complex, too... and most of it is based around noises being made about "drugs" and "Terrorism".

Reminds me of civilians who call the president their "Commander in Chief."
