Many times when using my 870 super magnum the shells don't extract they get stuck in place and the bolt comes back and then I have to pull the spent shell out. Is this from not keeping the chamber clean enough or is it a bad extractor?

no its seems fine no marks or scratches. The shells can be really stuck like when pulling back on the action.

I started having a similer problem with my Mossberg 500, gave the chamber a really good scrubbing and I haven't had any further problems.

I have found in the past that if you run 2 3/4" shells in your magnum chamber then try to run 3 " it can jam as you describe/ Much like runny 38s through your 357 and getting a crud ring.

How old is the gun, round count and are you useing reloads ?

I had a similar issue this past summer i found a pile of crud had built up in between the extractor and the bolt.
Who new you had to clean an 870 more than once every tweenty years.

I once had a similar problem, empty shells weren't extracting. I had bought a value pack of Winchester shotshells, and almost every single one of them weren't crimped correctly, so the shells were flared out at the front. Some of them were so bad they wouldn't even chamber.

Not you apparently. [wink]

I've met hunters who've said they never clean their deer guns. I guess the thinking is, if they're only using that gun for a few weeks a year, and not firing many rounds at all through it, what's the point? I don't hunt (yet) but I'd say it would make sense to keep that shotgun clean and sliding smooth. Does the smell of Hoppes or CLP scare deer away? [laugh]

A while back I shot trap with my 870. After 35 - 40 rounds I started to experience shells failing to extract without substantial effort. This happened on a few outings and would ruin my day.

I had been cleaning with a nylon brush and Hoppes. After changing over to a wire brush (brass) I noticed the problem stopped happening.

I had a similar problem, shells with a lot of charge would get stuck. Someone recommended polishing the chamber by wrapping a wire cleaning
brush with fine steel wool , chucking it in an electric drill, and polishing for about twenty or thirty seconds.

That fixed the problem for me, with an 870 express. Have not had stuck shells since then.

Had that problem a few years ago....with my 870 20 gauge. Right in the middle of hunting season...shells would get so stuck I'd have to remove the trigger group to get them out.

Didn't have time to mess around right in the middle of the season....traded the gun away...but I suspected the follower or extractor.

My dad's 870 12 gauge, has never had an issue like that.
