While chronoing my new loads the other day, I brought my 4” 320 to see how they did in that vs a 5.25” barrel. I basically figured out that I cannot make PF (1087fps) with a 4” barrel without going at or near max load. This would be for CCP* division in IDPA, so I would need to make PF.
Examples:
Win 4.0 244, with 115 LRN. Hodgdon says 1092, I got 980. At 4.3 they say 1150, I got 1058. The max load is 4.5
4.9 BE-86, with 115LRN Hornady says 1067, I got 1011. At 5.2, they say 1087, I got 1035. The max is 5.5
Same thing happened with FMJ 115
Bullsyse, I get 1130fps out of a 5.25”, with 4.3, the max is 4.5
However, with a 147, I was able to get 128PF out of the 4” using 4.2 of BE-86, the max is 4.7.

Is this just normal? Should I just get 147s if I want to shoot CCP and call it a day?

Concealed Carry Division, not Chinese Communist Party. Although I would shoot both.

Just run em up a little hotter or switch to 124's or 147's. You're not gonna hurt the gun if it's a G19 or M&P or similar, they can all handle +p and NATO and the new M1152 ammo which is running a 115gr at close to 38 Super velocities. Your crimp and seating depth will also have an effect on pressures and velocities so figure that in too. If you crimp more or seat deeper you will drive pressures higher generally.

Yep, normal it is.

147's will get you where you want to be.
124/ 125's might do the trick, or at least get you above min.

Looking at a burn rate chart, Bullseye would have been the fastest and should have gotten you closer. Fast is what you want for the short stuff.
As much as I'd hate to say it, maybe try Titegroup. Its more accessible than Clays. One of the Viv-vit powders was another one. N-320 I think.

Which Hodgdon powder?

I load 124 grain plated over 4.0 grn of TiteGroup and make power factor comfortably. That's in everything from my BUG (G43) up to my SSP/ESP/Production/CO guns (G34s).
