9mm revolver, anyone has any feedback

Anything made by Taurus is a con, regardless of the caliber.

Ruger made an SP101 in 9mm, but they are hard to find and expensive. They require moonclips. 9mm is not as powerful as .357, but the shorter 9mm round in moonclips is faster to reload than .357s in a speedloader. The shorter 9mm round is also easier to extract.

S&W made a 9mm K-frame that did not require moonclips -- the 547. They are rare and hard to find.

S&W also made a 9mm J-frame -- the 940. This does require moonclips. They are also relatively hard to find.

There is no advantage to it, sorry.

Well I take that back in theory 9mm ammo should always be available.

If the rest of your collection was 9mm and you didn't want to buy any new rounds for inventory.... reason 2

But IMHO if you have to own a revolver ( and everyone should) a .357 Magnum is the one you should own.

I have a 4" S&W 547 that I love to shoot. Greg Derr did a trigger job on it and it's one of the nicest shooting guns one can own. 9mm is the only pistol caliber I load. Thats a plus.

I have a S&W 547 NIB. I love novelty firearms and it was too good a deal to pass up.

Also have a Ruger with interchangeable .357 Mag and 9mm cylinders.

No moon clips required on either.

Charter Arms makes double action swing-out revolvers in 9mm and .40, which do not use moon clips

They're Mass compliant too, unlike Taurus.

IIRC, the Ruger is a single action convertible model.
The 9mm cylinder chambers are cut with a shoulder so the case headspaces on the case mouth, as it would in the chamber of a semi-auto.
The cartridge rim is not used for headspacing or shell extraction, as it would in a double action (with or without moon clips) because you push the shells out individually with the ejector rod.

Why would you want a 9mm revolver?

I've got one (Ruger Blackhawk Convertable) which is a lot of fun, but I find I never use the 9mm cylinder since I started reloading, I really don't see the point.

The only upsides to a 9mm revolver are 1) the ammo is cheaper, and 2) you can say, "hey! Check this out! It's a 9mm revolver!"

Most of my pistols are 9mm expect the 1911, there is the main reason why I want to check out the 9mm revolver. Why is Taurus such a bad choice?

Check out the link Rich posted above.

Also, where are you going to get one in Mass anyway ?
They're not Mass compliant and likely never will be.
I suppose if you really wanted one bad enough, someone may transfer one for you, but good luck.

The Ruger SP101 and the S&W 940 are the ones to look at. Decent triggers that are readily made glass-smooth by a gunsmith. While the S&W 547 is really cool (doesn't need moonclips), the short barreled J-frame is what makes the 9mm revolver interesting. Otherwise, it's just a revolver in yet another cartridge. But 9mm+P out of a 2" barrel is about the same velocity - or more - than the same weight .357 mag from the same barrel. "Hunh?" you ask. Seriously. In a revolver the "barrel" length does not include the chamber, while it does for a semi. That 2" revolver barrel is like a 3" semi-auto barrel for the 9mm. Unless you're loading your own, that long .357mag cartridge is meant to burn with a 4" or longer barrel. Less and you get an amazing fireball and a slow bullet.

9mm+P short barrel rounds perform very well without as much flash or as much kick out of those short barrels. Moonclips are cheap and reliable (less than $1 each and very reusable, fast to reload like a speedloader).

Real results - compare the 2" barrel results:

Drawbacks are the same as for any steel snubby vs. modern pocket semi: Weight and carry capacity (5 in the heavy little gun, lumpy round reload packs in funny belt packs).

Had a Taurus .357. Back for repairs 3 times. Got rid of it. Had a pt22. Broke twice. Tried one more time with another 357. Shot six rounds and the top strap stretched, the cylender locked up and went out of time. Taurus, in my opinion, are pieces of crap. How they stay in business is a mystery.

Saw a guy shooting a Medusa @ HSC a few months back. It'll chamber/extract just about anything in the 38/9mm/357 family. Really more novelty than anything, but interesting.

Ruger also made a few of their speed/security six model in 9mm. I saw one on gunbroker recently for 5 or 6 hundred. As for the point of a 9mm revolver, If you carry a 9mm as your primary, it could be a good backup. Also, I figure if SHTF ever happens, theres gonna be a lot dead guys with wondernines pretty soon after [smile]
