I was looking into getting a survival kit ready'd and planning on getting a flare gun. Heckler & Koch make a flare gun i am serioulsy liking. Anyone know and can help me out?

How about just go to a chandlery (boat supplies store) and buy a kit with the pistol, cartridges, and stick smoke and light flares?

They are a hell of a lot cheaper and work just as well as some overpriced german flare gun.

The guns are made of plastic and are relatively inexpensive. The flares, however, are 12ga, and run around three bucks apiece. They have 25mm models that significantly outperform the 12ga guns, but they are very expensive. Do not use "red" flares for practice. They sell "white practice flares for that purpose. Be careful where you fire it, as they can, and will start fires. I suppose with the snow cover we have here, you're probably OK in that regard, for the near future anyway.

Go to your local "West Marine" store, pick it up off the shelf, and buy it, no questions asked! I'm not sure if they'll ship, if you order online.

Edit: They may be 12ga, but the recoil is less than .22 short!

I believe the problem is metal vs plastic flare pistols. Plastic flare pistols are not considered firearms while metal ones are.

Wouldn't it be great if they could handle reduced power 12ga shotgun ammo?
