With the reduction in and realignment of my collection, I found myself without an Obendorf made Mauser...which was totally unacceptable. I went up to Manchester on Wednesday 11/25 to take a look at six possible candidates in the auction coming up after Thanksgiving. There were more than two dozen Mausers available...more at one auction that I'd ever seen before. There were four that I selected to take a "shot" at: a tired, repaired, but safety only mismatched S/42G with sling, muzzle cover and rod, a worn but matched byf43 with no hood, and an excellent byf44 with sling, hood, and rod. Lastly was a matched 1939 42, well faded. All four had great bores.

On the first day of the auction I was outbid on the S/42G at $1500. On the second day I won the byf43 against another bidder for $1200; the byf44 went for $900, and the 39/42 for $1000. I had planned to go to NH and pick it up this past Monday, but NH had become a "red" quarantine/non-travel state after Thanksgiving. So that Monday I called and arranged for it to be shipped.

So to give me something to do on this rainy day, I made up this post. I have the missing parts waiting...so hopefully it will arrive next week.

A matched piece deserves original parts: worn sight cover, L&F sling, frosch, keeper, and muzzle cover.

Called today; shipping is moving slowly. I paid on the 30th...accordingly, mine should ship out the end of the week or early next week.

I was going to last Monday 11/30, but NH is a red state as is the rest of the country. I’d have to quarantine for two weeks. My wife preferred that I just get it shipped.

Not worth the risk.

My son tested positive for COVID today. Luckily we last saw him three weeks ago, so we’re clear. He and his roommate are in quarantine. We have no further information.

Got the rifle today...actually passed the UPS U-Haul truck on the way to work...so it will have to wait until tonight.🤬

A few pics...
byf43, #21065 no letter block
Matched visible numbers
Stock channel unnumbered
Hand guard numbered

The bad
Front band unnumbered, shows evidence of scrubbing under hard light
Rear band unnumbered
Reproduction cleaning rod

I guess I missed the bands in my inspection. But OK otherwise and still a good price.

Looking a little less good....got the butt plate off....6-16-44....translates to 6th day, 16th week 1944. Or April 15, 1944....no business on a January 1943 rifle. That's the problem with Amoskeag....you can't disassemble for inspection.

Do you have any recourse?

No recourse...”described to the best of our ability”. No mention of the stock in the description. I guess I had to be exceptionally thorough.
