"Dear NH Friends of Safer Communities –

Thanks to your support, legislation to repeal New Hampshire’s pointless and unsafe “Stand Your Ground” law passed in the NH House and now moves to the state Senate for a public hearing and floor vote.

HB135 passed by a razor-thin margin in the House (189-184), with all but three Republican Reps and 17 Democrats voting to kill the repeal. The bill faces an uphill battle in the Senate, where Senators in swing districts are being inundated with calls and emails from misinformed constituents who’ve been led to believe that HB135 will make it a crime for a person to defend themselves from a criminal attack in their own home.

We’re counting on you to help us set the record straight. We need you to call or email your state Senators NOW to let them know that HB135 is good bill and you support it.

Your message can be short and simple, but it’s more effective if you use your own words. Here is some accurate background information you can refer to when you contact your NH Senator:

HB135 does not repeal the right for people to use deadly force in self-defense when their lives are in danger, or when they are attacked in their own home. HB135 restores the definition of justified use of lethal force to the same definition as the time-tested law that protected the lives and safety of New Hampshire residents and their families for 34 years.
HB135 in no way impacts state laws related to gun ownership or firearm use. It protects the use of lethal force by any means when necessary for self-defense in a person’s home, and in public areas when there is no safe way to retreat from danger.
The old law did a good job of protecting the lives and families of New Hampshire residents, and we should restore it.
New Hampshire is a low-crime state and incidents of use of deadly force in self-defense are rare. But other states with “Stand Your Ground” laws have seen an increase in homicides where the victim was not armed or committing a crime at the time of the deadly encounter, and the perpetrator claimed he acted in self-defense. Do we really want to be a state where that kind of thing can happen?
Just as some people wrongly believe that passing HB135 will cancel their right to defend their lives and homes from a criminal attack, the expansive immunity provided by “Stand Your Ground” laws give some citizens the wrong impression that they have a legal right to take law enforcement into their own hands if they believe a bad act is being committed, instead of calling the police. Reinstating the standard of “lethal force as a last resort” in public places makes our communities safer by discouraging this kind of misunderstanding.
New Hampshire did not need a “Stand Your Ground” law in 2011, and we do not need it now. The 2011 law needlessly jeopardizes the health and safety of law-abiding people and promotes an unhealthy tolerance for public violence and the taking of human life when there are other means of securing personal safety. That’s not consistent with mainstream New Hampshire values.
You can find more message points and detailed information about the problems with “Stand Your Ground” laws in other states here (pdf):

Please send a personal email or make a call this week and urge your state Senator repeal the reckless provisions of the 2011 “Stand Your Ground” law by voting to pass HB135.

Anyone know any good hackers? Just attack their websites.

they want to attack our second amendment, let's go after their first.

I can't imagine living in a state where you have to worry about a stand your ground law. Not in my wildest dreams would one ever make it to the senate floor, let alone get passed or even voted on in MA.
