I'm contemplating what a my next addition should be. One of my thoughts is a subcompact (or compact) 9mm, DA/SA hammer, with a safety. The only one I can find on the MA list is the HK P30SK. I think that's a good choice but wanted to know if I'm missing another good choice to compare it against. I would prefer to no pay the Mass import tax if possible. Are there any other options?

A Beretta 92FS Compact might fit your bill.
A little on the meaty side but it's doublestack and takes full sized prebans if you have them.
You could never go wrong with a G19 if you can find one for a reasonable price though. The AK of handguns.

Thanks for help. I will check into the 92FS. I have a G19 but am working through the brass to the face issue on it. I sent it to Glock and they improved it, but didn't cure it yet.

I didn't know about the SW 3913. that looks worth looking into.

the LC9 is a good option if I decide to go with a striker. I like the size of it. for a striker that size I kind of like the PPS M2 if it ever becomes available.

I was a DA/SA guy (H&K USP-C 40) and wanted a ultra compact carry. A friend has a LC9 I tried...and hated the long trigger pull. Tried a Sig P238 and liked the SA so I picked one up. Real accurate little gun for summer carry. However I still wanted something a little bigger for the other 3 seasons. Decided on a striker fire Ruger SR9C. What a great gun at a GREAT PRICE ($369 at Four Seasons)!!! I was really impressed with the crisp trigger action and accuracy. I added a Talon grip which has held up really well. Recently added a Viridian CL5 laser to make it a more tactical weapon. With a White Hat IWB holser it's a super carry solution.

The third generation S&W semi-autos are great. I have a 6906 that I absolutely love. They also made a single-stack version. The double-action pull is very long and the single-action is very short. Basically it's a combat trigger.

I really appreciate all the help. You have really opened my eyes on some good options. I will definitely hit my LGS and see how they feel and learn more about them. I'm probably going to be posting more questions about them too. :)

SW 3913 is a nice gun but less practical than modern options.

if looking for DA/SA options,
P30sk
P2000
P2000sk
Sig P239
Sig P229

don't overlook the standard P2000. it's one of my favorites. approx G19 sized. great pistol. the DA pull is heavy but for like $10 can swap out the mainspring with an HK 10# (factory is like 12 or 14) and will make DA pull considerably smoother.

His criteria was da/sa and a safety. Doesnt that rule out the 239, 229, and P2000 series?

gotcha, didn't realize he wants a thumb safety too. my thumbs have long abandoned doing any work. i leave the "safety" to my booger hook. [smile]

P30sk has a DA/SA w/ safety.

There's also the USP Compact 9mm but it's not MA compliant, though not sure all the shops know that.

You're right, P2000 has an LEM version with safety, but not a DA/SA w/ safety.

You can find the FN FNX in some MA shops. Very similar to the HK p30. Hammer fired, manual safety, decocker. About the size of a Glock 19.

Beretta compacts aren't easy to come by. Wilson combat is putting one out. Don't know who sells them though.

You won't have any issues with a 92 compact. Unless the extra ounces bother you.

I'll second the sig 938. Slim, light ( 16oz ) , but doesnt hold as many rounds as some others. Or, the new ruger 9mm 1911 commander.

I didn't know there was a P2000 version out there with a safety. I liked how it fit my hand but didn't know there was a version with the safety. I will have to look for one. The sig 938 keeps coming up. I'll have to check Mass Firearms to see if they have one to rent.

the P2000 9mm full size model without thumb safety is possibly my favorite 9mm pistol ever. the DA pull is plenty heavy with stock mainspring. have you shot one? if not I would try it before deciding it needs a thumb safety. to me festooning the P2000 with a safety would be straight tragic. the only mod I've made is flush baseplates in lieu of the absurd finger-rest ones they include from factory.

You should be able to find an S&W 69xx, or 39xx, or one of the predicate models. The 69xx guns, certain 39xx guns, and predicate models are not on the EOPS list, but there should be decent numbers of pre-98 guns floating around. (Certain 39xx TSW guns are on the list).

The Sig P229 and 239 are on the list as well, in variety of calibers and in conventional and DAK trigger options.
