I have been toying with the idea of a race gun - the STI Trubor seems to be the entry-level model and in my projected price range. Does anyone have any experience with the gun or alternatives in that price area?

Its a good gun for the money. But its fatal flaw is that it is not flattopped. That will limit you to STI mounts only, which sit higher than most.

A better direction to look is a used custom. I haven't paid over 2500 for any of my used open guns and they have all had very few rounds through them

I'd be willing to let my SV go for 2500. Has a Doctor sight melted into it, but if you wanted to add a different slide it would still be worth it. Very nice gun with very few rounds thru it.

If I were thinking about Open, I'd look for a used Brazos or Bedell Super or Super Comp. They do turn up more often that most folks think.
