Hi all,
I recently purchased some tritium night sights for my XD and was wondering if anyone has a sight tool that I could borrow? Really don't want to drop $120 on a tool that I'll probably only use once. Happy to pay for shipping both ways if you have one I could use.
Thanks! [thumbsup]

Ive done the hammer and punch on my Glocks all the time never an issue. But I've heard the SA's are tight. I have my XDm that I was going to try this on. All you can really do is try it with the punch and some penetrating oil. If you can't get it out then you'll have to get the tool. I've hammered on night sights pretty hard. Never an issue I've found meprolights to go in better and are less expensive.

If I couldn't get them out I'd buy them from a shop and usually they don't charge all that much to install. It might be worth it if it's a one time thing

This, and the XD sight dovetail is notoriously tight. Like, cut-the-sights-out tight. I'd definitely not want to try it with a punch.

It is. So tight that the tool manufacturers say not to try using the tool to remove the factory rear sight, but that it should get the front sight out and the new sights in. I've already tried soaking the slide in penetrating oil for a couple days, then using a punch and 3 lb hammer on the rear sight and haven't gotten it to budge,,, yet.... Next trick to try will be heating the slide, then cooling the rear sight with an ice cube before trying to bang it out. New sights will definitely need to spend some time in the freezer before I attempt to install them, even with the tool. They are the Meprolight sights that will be going in.

Wow...thats nuts. WTF would they be in there that tight for. When I saw a you tube video of someone using an air chisel removing the front sight I knew there might be trouble

I definitely would not use a hammer and punch on XD night sights. Check out xdtalk.com for a bunch of other users' experiences. Many folks have had to cut the old sights out, and you run the risk of messing up your slide doing that.

One option is to send your slide and new sights to the guys at xd-hs2000.com. They are XD experts and will install your sights for $20 with a 24 hour turnaround. All the local smiths I have talked to either won't even touch an XD or want 4+ times more than that for the installation and can't do the work for at least a month.

Thanks for the tip! That's a great price for sight installation. I'll check it out.

Just got my slide back from James at xd-hs2000.com. Quick turnaround and the new sights are installed perfectly. The factory front site was broken during removal, but I kind of expected that. Overall very pleased with the service & price. Thanks for the recommendation.

Same here.....just got 3.8 XDm slide back....sights were done perfect. No damage to the old ones either. I just bought him from them and he put them in at no additional cost to me. I'd say total time from me shipping to slide coming back was about 5 days. Thanks for the recommendation as well.

I'm glad to hear that you guys are happy with James' work. I hope to have the $ in another week or so to send him another slide of mine. I've never heard a bad thing about him, and I know he stands behind his work. I usually try to keep my business local, but he's one of the good guys and I haven't found a good local person in the same ballpark for the same kind of work.

Yeah. I'd don't think you can go wrong. I didn't want some gunsmith telling me the cost doubled or tripled because he had a hard time. This guy deals with this for a living and there are no extras. Buy them from him and he puts them in free or buy them yourself and it's 20 bucks. Simple and easy.
