I've been toying with the idea of buying a 1911 in 10mm and wonder if anyone here has one or had one in the past? Please don't lecture me on the expensive ammo etc.....just need to know how former/current owners feel about the guns, recoil, accuracy etc.

Thank you.

If it doesn't say Dan Wesson on the side of it don't bother. Any of the DW 10mms make everything else look like junk. A clean Colt Delta Elite wouldn't be a bad 2nd option, though.

If you really want a 10mm though, I also would strongly urge you to consider a G20/20SF or a 29/29SF. I know you said "1911" but the Glock is is pretty much the king of the hill in terms of value and reliability. If I went back to 10mm I would probably get a Glock.

I think flotter had one for sale a while back in the classifieds too.

I believe John from Remsport has one that he built. If you give him a call I'm sure he can answer you questions as well as build you one, if that is the route you are looking to go. I had contemplated getting into 10mm, but $$ is too tight right now.

I've build a few 10's, mainly on the Delta Elite frame, I like them, even built one as a "bullseye" gun for a shooter in NJ. There are a number of good bullets on the market which can keep recoil down. They recoil about the same as a 38 super.

I have had three total and still have one in the safe. I love mine. It is a powerhouse when loaded properly, which I prefer over the 45. As for accuracy, I can not yet get it to group as well as some of my 45s, but I haven't put a lot of time tying to get the right load either.

What models do you have Dave?

I've got a stainless Colt Delta Elite that I picked up from an NES member some years back. I had the stock grip safety, thumb safety, and sights replaced with a beavertail grip safety, extended thumb safety, and Heinie Straight Eight sights. I changed it to a standard single spring, recoil plug system. It's a nice gun. Perhaps my most accurate 1911. Recoil isn't bad -- I've fired some Buffalo Bore ammo through it, 220 gr at 1200 fps, and it wasn't bad at all (and I'm a recoil wuss).

But I wouldn't get a 10mm unless you reload. It is a great cartridge reload as you can go from powder puff to quite hot (though EddieCoyle would probably consider that to still be wimpy). But 10mm ammo is really expensive if you buy it retail.

My Delta Elite is a Series 80 style gun, so it has a firing pin safety operated by the trigger. That means it is drop safe (unlike most 1911s), but the trigger isn't quite as crisp.

Custom Diamond 10mm

image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg I have a Glock 29. It is fine. But my real gem is the one Lou Biondo assembled for me. Lou is awesome to work with and has the ear of some of the top gunsmiths in the country. I was able to pick out everything from the diamond Caspian frame to the type of trigger and hammer. Lou owns Business End Customs now in (Peobody) and I can't tell you how much I love this gun. It is a 1911 Commander chambered in 10mm. I have come to love the 10mm round and now reload it. It is incredible. Everyone that sees it and holds it marvels at Lou's workmanship. Will post pictures in a bit.

I would put the accuracy and quality against a Delta any day. I have had students that have never shot a handgun before put two through the same hole.

This gun recoils more back than up, that and a light trigger allows for very accurate rapid firing. Less recoil than a .45 and even my Beretta 92FS seems snappier. This will be my IDPA gun of choice.

IIRC, B&K Sales has a Colt Delta Elite for sale.

Aloha
Not for long! Ssshhhhh! That's going to be mine.[wink]

OP. My G29sf is my EDC. My G20 is my house gun. Buffalo bore ammo for "off the shelf". Reloading highly recommended. 10 mm is a great choice. Good luck with the 1911(but my vote is for a Glock).

No 1911, but g29 and SW 1006...I love both of them. Lots of fun, every time I shoot the 1006 someone comes over to ask wtf is that. I think it is a real slick looking gun...SW 3rd gens are pretty. I would consider one of those if you come across one. Glocks are awesome though...the 29 is with me quite often.

I have a Kimber Eclipse in 10mm. Its a tack driver. The recoil is less than my 45's though. Ammo is more expensive.

I stumbled across a Delta Elite with a lot of custom work a couple years ago, and I don't know what I was doing without one for so many years. It's a joy to shoot, accurate, effective, and it differentiates you nicely at the range among all the .45s. It sat around a bit more than I'd like before I got dies and brass, but now I can reload even cheaper than my .45ACP (note, if you're going to use it for self defense, I wouldn't carry reloaded ammo). I don't think 10mm brass lasts as long as the .45ACP, but small price to pay for the joy of shooting it.

My avatar is a 10mm. Stop in and you can shoot it into my test tank. Not a range, however you will get the feel of shooting a 10mm 1911.
