Hey, NES.

I'm contemplating purchasing a Mossberg MVP Patrol .308 but don't have a place where I can try one out. If any NES'er has one, what do you like? Dislike? If you could change one thing about it, what would it be?

I own an MVP patrol chambered in .223. It's a very handle bolt gun and I would purchase again. personally i went .223 because I wanted a bolt action for the range that uses AR magazines for convenience and also wanted the option to hunt medium game with it.

pros:
-solid accuracy - for me it shoots 2 MOA with match grade 55gr ammo, probably others could do better
-lightweight
-uses AR15 mags (i'm not sure about the .308 mag options, FAL?)
-overall very handy rifle and functions nicely

cons:
-bolt handle is a little small, can be tough to open bolt after firing (i'm probably going to have the bolt drilled/tapped and install a larger bolt knob)
-typical mossberg feel, which IMO means the fit-and-finish isn't exactly beautiful....kinda has the KelTec type feeling - I dunno can't put it to words
-seems to feed best from PMAGs. sometimes the steel 10rd or GI mags require some extra push on the bolt to get rounds to feed.

If I were going .308 personally I would probably want a longer barrel than the 16" patrol model.

overall it's a good rifle and worth the $$, especially having the magazine options.
Just my 2c.

I handled (and considered buying one) briefly at the LGS in Holbrook. It was .223, with bipod, and it looked and felt good for the short time I handled it.

The MVP .308 takes SR25/DPMS pattern mags as well as M14/M1A mags.

That's weird, mine won't seat PMAGs unless I really bang on them. It's why I went out and got some GI 20rd mags, which work great.

I have noticed (by having others shoot it - I don't have a problem with it) that it's easy to short-shuck this gun and fail to grab a round from the magazine.

I also heard that PMAGs didn't seat well with the .223 MVP, which is why I was pleasantly surprised. Some people told me that earlier models of the MVP were essentially incompatible w the PMAGs and sometime in ~late 2013 Mossberg did some tweeking. When did you get your rifle? I got mine new in May of this year and perhaps this is why it feeds PMAGs? I dunno.

one thing w PMAGs though, the bolt cannot close with an empty mag because the unique PMAG follower obstructs the little drop-down notch on the MVP bolt.

As you mention, I do have noticed some FT-feeds if the bolt isn't completely cycled....i haven't had this issue but 2 of my friends and my woman who aren't into bolt-guns seemed to have that problem.

overall it's kindof a strange little rifle but I'm a bit shocked that it hasn't gotten as much love given it uses AR15 mags. I figured a bolt gun w AR15 mag compatibility would have been a huge hit but i guess i'm just a weirdo.

Pretty sure I got mine before the date you mentioned. I think it's that unless you bring the bolt absolutely all the way back, the little spring loaded part of the bolt doesn't drop down and it therefore won't strip a round out of the magazine. I've never had an issue, but yeah anyone unfamiliar with a bolt gun might.

Edit: your last part came in as I was writing my response. Yeah, I like odd guns like this. It might have something to do with the fact that if you stick a 30 or larger round magazine in it, maybe even a drum, the FUDDs won't know what to think [laugh]

everytime i clean the MVP bolt I see that little spring-loaded drop down tab and i think to myself "hi there little guy...when do you plan on breaking off?"

but somehow it is still working. i'm perplexed.

I could see the spring eventually needing replacement if you shot this a lot (I mean a LOT) or it rusted out, but I imagine the piece itself is made out of the same material and treated the same as the rest of the bolt... so then the question becomes: how strong is the pin that retains it?

also note a good deal of fouling between this little tab and the bolt itself....not that it's a issue with regular cleaning but i wonder if the tab movement upwards to the bolt could become impeded.

overall there's I'm convinced the achilles heal of the MVP design is this little feeding tab system...but then again i don't know how they could have used AR15 mags without some such contraption.

it's probably best for me not to think about it too much. i have a tendency to "fix" things that aren't broken and thus create more problems for myself. [sad]

i have heard nothing but good things about the mvp patrol in 308 from a friend in the midwest. i have not shot it but he says it is his favorite hunting rifle for a couple of reasons. 1. as others have stated it takes m1a mags as well as dpms ar10 mags 2. the bolt is quick to actuate d/t its smaller size 3. it is lightweight and short (good for upland trekking through heavily wooded areas where he hunts) I hope this info helps

I think if I didn't already have a Ruger gunsite scout I'd have one of these Mossbergs. I've been quite pleased with the accuracy and function of the .223 version. I may still get the Mossberg .308 some day.

I love my Mossberg MVP. One of my favorite rifles!

I do agree about the love. I am def looking forward to getting the 308 version someday.

I know it got really good reviews from numerous gun editors.

If you don't have a MVP, go get one! Bring the AR and MVP to the range. Same mags and same ammo.Call it a day!

It does look badass with a 30 rounder.
