So, I am sure it has been asked before, but I guess the 100th time won't hurt.

I want to build myself something along the lines of a "SPR" but I really don't want to spend the time or money looking for a 18" barrel. I don't like the length of a 20"
So, I thought why not go with the 16" barrel? My question is, how accurate will a 16" barrel with a 1/9 twist be? Will this be an effective SPR rifle? Or, should I go with a 1/7 twist.

I don't want a sniper rifle here, but the build is for accuracy and maneuverability. [rolleyes]

This is the same question I asked a few years ago.
First what ammo do you plan on useing the most. 1/7 will handle heavy bullets say 69grain and up 1/9 will handle the 69 gn and less.
Accuracy is dependant on a lot of things also.
From what the barrel is chambered for... Nato, wylde, 223rem, match?
Also the ammo. If your going to blasting bulk surplus or wolf and tula accuracy will be well?
Then one of the response I got from a club member is how well can you shoot?
Honestly on a very good day shooting prone I'm thrilled to shoot 2" groups.
Off the rest my RRA with match ammo will shoot 1" groups.
I was also reminded that its a battle rifle by design ment to hit targets not hit targets in small groups. Advantage to the 223 rem for being a accurate round helps the AR a lot. So if you plan on dumping bul m193 or 855 or steel cased ammo a barrel with a 1/9 will be fine or 1/8 1/7 will do also.
I put Wilson match barrels on 5 or my 8 builds. Good accuracy/price point.

I wanted to keep things simple for my first build, and also liked the idea of the 18" 'SPR' design with rifle length gas system. There are so many potential options that it can become hard to make choices, so I eventually just took one of the options Bravo Company offered.
Good equipment, Good QC/Reliability, Good range of Options - On the Pricey side, but it does make finishing the build easier.

Here's a sample of what they currently have available:

Have fun with it!

The length of the barrel has nothing to do with accuracy.

It only has to do with muzzle velocity.

What can help with accuracy is the longer sight radius of a longer barreled gun. If you intend to put a scope on the gun, a 16"barrel of a given weight will be more accurate than a 20 in barrel of the same weight. The 16 will be thicker and stiffer, which DOES contribute to accuracy.

What twist you use will be determined by what weight bullets you want to shoot. This has been debated ad nauseum on the internets. Ask the google.

GM barrels and AR15 performance both make great barrels.

Bravo is going to give you a military tough barrel with mediocre accuracy. GM and A15performance will give you a more accurate barrel.
