So I thought I'd start a new thread for this. I picked it up my first AR-15 from my friend yesterday. Everything looks good, though there's a little bit of wear on the finish, on the right side, just behind the ejection port. A couple of questions for you guys though: 1. My friend that sold it to me said that he had put close to 10,000 rounds through it, should I be aware of any service life/maintenance issues? 2. How many rounds is my barrel good for? How about the firing pin? The extractor?

10,000 rounds if the gun was well lubricated will have almost no impact. Have a gunsmith check headspace and if it shoots, don't worry.

Is it a carbon steel or chrome lined barrel?

As for internal parts, they will look perfect up until they fail. Just get a parts kit and replace stuff if it breaks.

Unless it's chrome lined, I'd say the barrel was about done.
New gas rings on the bolt.
Maybe a new extractor/spring.
Check firing pin tip for jagged edges.

Maybe I'll have it checked out - can anyone recommend somewhere local that would be a good place to bring an AR?

gas rings, buffer spring for sure if it has had 10k with no maint. if you are still getting decent accuracy the barrel should be fine. if it was abused you could see throat erosion and poor groups

I would probably change out the bolt carrier assembly at 10k too. I have seen cracks develop. new bolt with new rings, extractor, spring, insert and o ring would go along way.
