I'm thinking of building a AR this time around, at least partially. I enjoyed changing out the original pieces on my Bushmaster for new Magpul furniture, and I felt that I was actually learning how it works better. So I figure if I build the next one I'll know it much better inside and out. I may end up buying a complete upper, but my question in the build is this.

If I build my own lower, am I looking for anything other than mil-spec on a stripped lower to make sure it fits with any upper? If it matters, I would like to put in a ambi-safety selector, as I am left handed.

Yup. Like Don said, get a good milspec lower and you'll be good to go. Should fit any part available out there pretty much, including ambi safety selectors and whatnot.

Depending on what your local licensee charges for a transfer, you may want to go to aimsurplus.com

They've got spikes lowers for $79 with free shipping. They're sold out now, but if you enter your email address they will send you a notification when they get them in. Then you'd better act fast as they sell out in less than an hour.

But first, talk to your local guy, with the transfer fee, it may be cheaper to buy local.

I've also had great luck with aeroprecision lowers. I consider them to be a premium product. Good stuff at a low cost, just no cool pictures on the side like Spikes.
