I have a pretty good AR setup, but I've been thinking lately thats it's too... high end? I'm pretty much a beginner rifle shooter and maybe something more basic would be more appropriate. I have a white oak upper with 1/4 moa adjusts, pinned, etc. Maybe I just need to get into high power or something so I can get some more use out of it. Or maybe I just have an itch to get something more basic and practical. I feel like my skills just don't match my rifle so its a waste.

Of course I know everyone here will just say buy a 2nd one! [wink]

You might want to do a search on "Appleseed" and check out the training that (IIRC) Dwarven1, Nickle, and a few others here on NES offer. I have not been able to attend one yet but these training sessions have a great reputation.

I would be one to say get another upper. The one you have should generally only be used for matches and practice for matches. You're probably going to get a barrel life of about 5-7K rounds.

Getting a second upper for plinking and training just makes sense IMO. [grin]

Could not agree more. The AR-15 is so modular that you could buy a carbine upper and stock for range fun and/or self defense and keep the WO for match shooting....

The problem with buying an upper is that you'll invariably end up buying a lower for it. Then you need another upper.

Not if you practice some discipline with your buying habits. I have 3 uppers and 2 lowers and I'm not looking for another lower - I don't see the need to.

That upper you have is a match upper. If you're just plinking with it, it's wearing the barrel that is capable of shooting out the x-ring of an SR-1 target at 100yds off of the bench easily with match ammo. It wouldn't hurt to get another upper for just casual shooting and save the match upper for high power shooting. You never know... you might catch the high power bug and end up at Perry!

That's a bit high. Figure $20 for the extension assembly, $20 for the buffer/spring, $20 for the stock itself.

Or get a complete assembly off the shelf from online retailers for $50...

Wasn't aware that barrels had such short lifespans! I'm getting a lower in the group buy anyway so I guess I'll plan a budget AR for it. Or a dedicated .22 upper maybe for plinking. I knew I'd get this many votes for another AR [grin]

The barrel itself will last more than 5-7K rounds, but you'll probably lose the accuracy that's the whole point of owning a match-grade barrel in the first place.

You can shoot 30K rounds though it, you just wont be scoring 100-10x on the rapid fire stages. [smile]

At around 5-7K your sub moa will start to open up.

I would definitely get another upper for plinking.

The WO upper you have is capable of extreme accuracy (enough to win anywhere) depending on what it is fed and who is pulling the trigger.
If you want to get into highpower, hook up with the guys down at Nashua. They are a serious bunch and will steer you right.

Hi I can do a basic Mass. compliant upper for around $450.00
Flat top no sights.
You can custom order what you want in an upper and I will build it to your spec.
Stop down to JDL Sales in the dealer section NES. I have some uppers for sale with photos. I can also do a mil-spec lower complete with A2 stock starting at $275.00.
I always absorb the Mass. state 5% tax so you are already getting a 5% discount.
Also visit my web site at www.jdlsales.net or call me at 413 579 1994.

I just ordered a Ciener from Black Dog Machine. They had 3 left. $205 with the standard 10 rounder plus one of their own production 10 rounders.

I just got the lecture from the gf that buying 2 of the same gun within a year is foolish so I'll have to either make it a different caliber or something to justify it (or risk getting the eye-rolling every time I take them out). I couldn't make her understand the justification of a plinking vs competition style gun. Funny thing is she wanted me to get 2 chiefs specials not long ago, one in blue and one in chrome. [wink] And before anyone mentions it no, she's not the type that wouldn't notice some extra guns laying around, they don't all look the same to her. [crying] Does anyone make dedicated 22 uppers in A4 or A2 format? I'm not really into the spikes for some reason.

Man up and buy what you want.....[wink]

I'm joking of course and fully understand the "eye roll factor"...[rolleyes]
There is however a way you can do both - build a new one a piece at a time. Buy a lower for a hundred bucks and go from there. One piece at a time and before you know it - new rifle. I know .22's are cheap, but for me at least shooting .22lr out of a military rifle just feels wrong to me personally....

Well after a lot of thought I'm thinking I might just take another direction entirely. I'm starting to get the M14 bug so I'm thinking sell off the current AR to fund that. I'll still have the nes lower for a future build and I have a 10/22 for plinking. Something about the wood stock and the bigger kick of the 308 is just appealing to me right now. [grin]

[cheers] Gotta love the M-14....
