AR "Pistol" With Rifle Upper Still Pistol?

Say I have an AR lower that was born as a pistol with a brace and pistol tube. If I add a 16 or 20 inch rifle upper to it, would it still be a "pistol"? Long as I don't put any vertical foregrips on it, the AR pistol can have as long a barrel as I want on it and still considered a "pistol"?

There's also the catch all "firearm" term where it doesn't fit in any of the categories, but unless there's a state law that has their own definitions, there's no violating of any federal laws I can think of by putting a long barrel on a pistol.

In most states a gun with a barrel at/ over 16" is a rifle. You need to check state laws not federal for this "problem " that youve invented

So you are asking a MA law question and not a federal definition/question. This matters.

16" or greater rifled barrel is a rifle in MA. Period. Both current and new law.

The New Hampshire "loaded in a car" law uses the state law (RSA §159:1) definition of a pistol to make the distinction, not the federal/ATF definition.

OTOH, the updated definition of "loaded" in RSA §207:1 makes the whole thing moot.

In NH, you can carry a 14.5" pistol and brace loaded and ready to go in your front seat. Not sure what use something that big would be in a crammed vehicle cabin, but some people get hard doing stuff like that.
