This weekend is the American Radio Relay League = ARRL June VHF Ham Radio Contest.

ARRL has adopted FM as an acceptable mode, so your hand-held could come in.... handy.(?)
There may not be a colossal amount of activity, but activity is expected around the FM simplex frequencies.

Make a 'contact' between 2 ham stations (not through repeaters!), jot down the callsign, time of the contact, and maidenhead grid square of the station you are working then submit your log to the contest sponsor after the event.

This starts at 2pm EST (1800z) Saturday and runs through Sunday Night.

Determine your grid-square to provide to the stations you contact for the contest.

Have fun !

So I just go through frequencies and try and make contacts?

If you have a hand-held with scanning abilities, setup scans for these ranges;
147.42-147.57 Simplex
146.40-146.58 Simplex

Activity is going to be around, but not on the calling frequency 146.52. If you call someone on 146.52, it is good practice to move off of that calling frequency to make your contact, like 146.51. Since this is a contest, there are not usually folks for chit-chat, just the gridsquare, and move to other bands.

The frequency ranges above were derived from; Band Plan
