People (sheep) tend to pay attention to Hollywood and TV too much. Silencers are always used by the bad guys to cover up a murder.
Dumbass progressives think that is how they will be used by gun owners in real life. Thus they oppose restrictions being removed.
so- what you're saying is... if suppressors (which also silence the noise of a firearm) were sold to the public as easily as buying a box of ammo, they wouldn't show up more often with gun crimes?
I think not much. If your pistol has a suppressor attached it is very difficult to conceal it and it is also harder to shoot accurately. why would the average gang banger go thru the trouble and added expense?so- what you're saying is... if suppressors (which also silence the noise of a firearm) were sold to the public as easily as buying a box of ammo, they wouldn't show up more often with gun crimes?
Ah, excellent logic! By that token, every knife should have a required device installed so when you make a stabbing or slicing motion with it, it emits a 133 db explosive noise. This should cut down on knife crime immensely! Legitimate users
making dinner or something just need to wear ear protection!

Also, in those European countries where you can still legally own a firearm... suppressors are cash and carry items. And at many (most?) shooting ranges over there, suppressors are required both for noise abatement with neighbors and for safety concerns. Does Europe have a verifiable, statistically significant problem with illegal suppressor usage? No. So stop thinking about this emotionally and start thinking rationally.
...
To answer your question directly- A) there is no secondary feature to a knife; knives are made to cut, and that's all. whereas suppressors contain primary and secondary features.
B) yes, if a knife made a loud explosion sound every time it was used, that would pose as a serious deterrent.

you make some good points with the europe stuff- but a bit out of line saying they are easily obtainable, and saying I'm not thinking rationally... They are NOT easily obtainable, and they are NOT sold in most gun stores in new england. I am thinking 100% rationally. It's really a simple logic-train to follow actually... all criminals would prefer to not be caught > being stealthy is highly desirable to most criminals > suppressors DO MAKE GUNS QUIETER > therefor a suppressor IS a desirable item to a (smart) criminal. I know If I were a career criminal who used a firearm to carry out my illegal endeavors- having a suppressor would be top of my list of things to own- just another tool to help not draw attention to myself- that's a 100% rational thought right there. In my opinion, this author comes across as having a tantrum. A couple things in his article are incorrect. If he can't understand why some people (liberals, non-shooter republicans, democrats- whatever) are ignorant and suspicious about suppressors, then he shouldn't be writing articles in the first place. He lost some credibility with me as he passionately hammers the point that suppressors don't silence a gun... but then bases the premise of his article on the fact that suppressors are desirable tools to shooters because they make the gun less noisy to shoot (which IS THE REASON why "those" people don't like suppressors!!!) -they make guns quieter. who cares how they work, the FACT is, they DO make guns quieter! You can talk about pressure-waves all you want, at the end of the day, your ears feel better because the gun was quieter with a suppressor! Trust me, I share his frustration the amount of ignorance out there (don't get me started on people calling a rifle an "assault" rifle because it has black plastic on it!), but I also understand the other side. I'm MORE frustrated that people who know more about firearms aren't in political positions capable to educate the public about this nonsense! The guy who wrote this article is preaching to the choir! I'm sure 80% of the people who read his article already understand the basics behind a suppressor!
I do own a machine shop (lathe, mill, resurfacer among a bunch of other metal working tools) and I could easily make a suppressor, but even I am just to lazy to want to- not to mention I don't really want a boyfriend named bubba! ha- criminals want supressors for the same reason why I put a quiet muffler on my atv and turn the sound off when I surf porn...
Unless your name is Pete Townsend, and you have a medically-diagnosed, career-endangering case of Tinnitus, you're NOT convincing anyone that you NEED one of these things. Stop the B.S. Its a toy, at best. It does not improve accuracy one bit, in fact it probably makes things harder for you to keep on-target, what with that bulbous mass of metal attached to the end of your barrel. I have-yet to hear on any MA local news programs of Police having to respond, ad-nauseam, to noise complaints from area residents near outdoor gun ranges. People have been enjoying shooting sports, and defending themselves/family for decades without them. This is NOT a cross you want to nail yourselves to.
