Im looking to pick up something I can do some distance shooting with, bolt action. Ive got my eyes set on the Remingto 700, .223, as its a proven platform.

It would be nice to have something to "reach out and touch" with, but am wondering if this option would be reasonable for hunting as well.

Any suggestions, other options to look at?

.223 isn't the greatest round for mid/longer ranges... I'd go .308 at the very least.

THAT said, if you are dead set on .223, build yourself a quality AR. A tuned AR will be just as accurate (IF NOT MORE) as a base model Model 700... more expensive, but you have WAY more options with an AR.

Thanks for the input guys. The AR will be a seperate project - I was just thinking in terms of running the same caliber in both guns, but I guess it doesnt really make sense for what Im looking do to.

I almost jumped on a well priced Rem 700 today in .223, but Im glad I didnt!

If you got a 700 and you wanted to shoot at longer ranges you would have to get it rebarreled with a faster twist barrel that would allow you to shoot heavier bullets than what the factory tube would allow.

With that, you could shoot all the way out to 1000 yards accurately. As far as hunting goes you would probably be better off with somthing with a little more ohmmpf like a .308. However I have heard that Swift .224 75gr bullets are very good on whitetails at reasonable distances.

same gun .308 ?

+1, and consider savage as well. I was at Dick's this afternoon and almost put down money on a Savage Model 12 in 308 priced at $425 witha scope. I flip flopped, stalled, got home and started buying parts for a new AR build instead (see the my post in the "build it yourself" forum).

The twist rate (1:12) on the stock .223 Reminton is too slow for heavy bullets. I think they must intend that for light varmint bullets or something... The Savages have 1:9 twist on thier .223 chambered rifles (don't know why they don't go more aggressive).

i bought mine in the spring and was very very pleased with the accuracy, and instantly started building it up into a LONG range target/tactical/hunting gun but since ive gotten my Class A, my focus has gone off the long range rifles and onto pistols, hence why i just listed the Savage in the classifieds this week lol

but i can definately vouge for Savages accuracy/quality/value. They make a great product.
