I'm wondering if anyone would be willing to pepper a sheet of Level 3 armored glass (multilayer plastic actually) with 5.56 / 7.62 at their local range? Small arms fire is welcome as well, but I really need 6-8 larger caliber hits. If it matters, it will be a windshields from one of our up armored humvees and this will be part of a lobby display. Target is about 40inches wide x 18 inches tall.

I'm in metrowest, but happy to travel a bit and will pick up the cost of ammunition.

@76Too want to try again? :)
I’m 1000 miles away, unfortunately. It was a LOT of fun though and I’d definitely take you up on it if I were still in MA.

The only reason I shot that glass was because I was moving 1000 miles and didn’t want to take it with me due to weight!

I posted photos in my post above so you can get an idea of what you can expect it to look like. My personal opinion is that 9mm made the most aesthetically pleasing damage.

In the future, my private range is available.
No 5.56mm here, but 6.5mm Mauser, 7mm Mauser, 7.5x54/55, 7.62x51 and 7.65mm capable. Frangibles, live 22LR sabots and other bullet varieties possible (pictured rounds are inert, but live .22 LR can be used).

Curiosity: Piqued

What happens when you hit a target with a live 22LR?

@vicorjh if you up for it I'm happy to head you way. Next week some time? Happy to accommodate any gap in schedule you may have?

Certainly. The first half of the day any day next week with the exception of Monday would work for me. Afternoons are a bit more full but could coordinate something if that would work better.

I've only launched the live .22 rounds from the Argentine Mauser onto a steel plate. I assume they detonate, but I've only recovered a few chards of the case.

I'd think pulling the bullet and powder from a live .22 case and filling with BP might be more destructive; IDK...?

Metrowest reporting in. Here's the last one I shot up!

If things fall through and you need another option we can spray it at my range. I've got .308, 7.62x39, 5.56, 30-30, 5.7x28, various handgun calibers, etc. Located in Springfield area. Feel free to pm if needed.

Huge thanks to @vicorjh for taking the time to shoot up some level 3 ballistic glass from a up-armored HMMWV earlier this AM. I have a couple more of these windshields and may see what other calipers do at different ranges.

Below are some pictures of the damage caused by 6.5 CM (lower) and .308 from 200 yards. 170 and 168gr bullets. You can see some lead still embedded in the glass.

Both caused spalling of the glass at the rear, but neither penetrated through. Impressive, especially given this is "old tech" ballistic glass.

Big thanks again to @vicorjh for taking the morning to help out. For those that do not know him, he is an incredibly nice guy and equally impressive shooter.

Too kind. I really enjoyed this. Thanks for the opportunity and it was great to meet you.

I'm impressed with the performance of that laminate. Looking forward to seeing the results from additional calibers.
