[frown] I have a Para 16-40 and the grip safety does not have the memory groove and stands out from the backstrap 1/8 or so. To fix this I bought an Ed Brown Beavertail and need some help.

I put it on my Para and it fits... OK. I haven't done any alterations to the frame. I function checked the gun after installation. When I rack the slide with my hand depressing the grip safety the hammer will not cock. If I take my hand off the grip saftey and rack the slide the hammer will cock.[shocked] WHY?

Needless to say I took the thing off and put the old one back on!

But, I still want to know why! I am going to call Dawson on Monday to see about getting a Para beavertail with the memory groove.

Umm... I think it is supposed to... It does on my S&W.

The grip safety only blocks the trigger pull on the 1911.

I recommend a careful viewing of this to understand how the grip safety functions.

If you hide the right parts you can see how the grip safety prevents the trigger from being depressed by that funny little stepped stud that blocks the trigger bow.

Looking at the two grip safeties off the gun the positions of the tang that stops the trigger are identical. What is different is the clearance inside the bodies for the sear, disconnector spring, and the hammer strut. I am begining to think that with the saftey in the firing position I am applying preasure to the disconnector, or sear spring which will prevent the sear from engaging the hammer and therefore not allowing the gun to cock.

Its too bad cause it looks like a nice unit, and now I'm out $40. O' well, lesson learned.

I love the animation on that site, only need to put it in 3D and lets us rotate to see it from all sides. John Moses Browning was a genius. It amazes me how few fasteners he used. Everything interlocks with minimal tools.

Ahh.. I see I read your first post too fast! You problem is this:
When I rack the slide with my hand depressing the grip safety the hammer will not cock.

Could be as Jim42 says, but then the slide should not go all the way back.

Is it possible that the tang is contacting the sear?

Matt,

Its hard to say when everything is assembled. The tang that stops the trigger is off to the right side and away from the sear. It is actually outside of the 80 series firingpin blocking toggle.

Related subject... I have to join the NES if for no other reason, then just so I can post pictures.

I contacted Dawson, Brownell's and Para. Para is no longer making the bump style safety. I think I will just leave this alone. I may revisit it someday but for now, the gun works well and life is good.
