I am looking for a centerfire bolt action rifle that will be used primarily at the range for making noise and having fun with my son. I have a Mosin that we really enjoy, but we would like to buy a modern scoped rifle. I would primarily use this gun for fun, so I would like the ammo to be easy to find and relatively inexpensive. I also may use this for medium to large game, but that will not be the primary reason for this gun. I would like it to be relatively accurate out to 200 yards and I would like all of this for about $500 or less. I have looked at Mossberg, Savage and Remington and their low end guns get really mixed reviews. Does anyone have any suggestions?

.308 ammo is more than twice the price of .223.
If you get the .223, then after a while, unless you reload, you'll be able to afford the .308 on just the savings.

You can switch out the barrels and bolt head and magazine box on the Savage. I would start with a .223 and then if you have an opportunity to go hunting with it you can get a barrel, bolt head and magazine box for 308 or something else.

Check out the Stevens 200 in 308. They are the same as a Savage 10, but have a lightweight profile barrel and a cheap plastic stock. The rifle will be 300-350 and a scope with mount will be $150 and up.

As you want to upgrade, it will accept all Savage 10 parts, including barrels, stocks, and triggers.
