Well today is my 46th birthday and I have decided to celebrate it by funneling some of my hard earned cash into one thing that I have never owned. I've been into guns for 35 years or so, but always the blued steel and walnut stock types, which I still love. I'd like to by one of those evil looking black guns that make the antis cringe. I'm looking for suggestions, budget somewhere around a grand +/-. Anybody willing to discuss with me?

Well I'd assume if you're looking for an assault rifle you're thinking AR, AK, FN clone maby?

Primary intended use?
Any idea which one appeals to you?
What kind of accuracy & range do you expect from it?
Cost of ammo an issue?
5.56, 7.62x39, 7.62x51 for longer range perhaps?

Those are the first questions I'd address.

Saltydude,

Still looking at options, like the AR platform for it's versatility, dont know much about the FN. The AKs , have not seen enough of them to have any opinion
Primary use will be shooting at the range, not really a hunter or competition shooter.
I'm used to having pretty accurate firearms, so that is pretty important, 100 to 200 yrds.
Ammo cost is not an issue, I already reload.
I like the idea of 5.56 , already have a nice bolt action 30-06 I use to make big bangs

AR is looking better and better then.

WB. I have more fun with my AK than AR these days & think their bad ass. However I believe most that chime in will say Get an AR & I agree. It is a rifle every American should own. It'll give you the accuracy you seek & they certainly look evil. [devil2]

So, it may be an AR that is the scratch for itch, what in the 1K neighborhood would be a decent place to start looking?

i got a spikes mid length a few months ago for just under $1k and like it a bunch! it looks like our choices are getting better in ma but i'd be weary of the cheepos. my buddy grabbed a s&w about a yr ago & its a nice file too

Scott,
That may be an option to get my feet wet, could spend the extra cash on optics, etc.
What stores have you seen those prices? You can PM me if you dont want to disclose
publicly. I did see a used Bushmaster with a stainless bull barrel at a local store that actually wet my appetite for an evil looking gun, but after some research it was not that great of a deal and only so so reviews.

I'm going to advocate the build it yourself route. Get a stripped lower and a complete kit from Model1Sales .. they sell AWB compliant kits so you get a good opportunity to build exactly what you want (for WAY less than a grand btw) and learn a lot about how they're built as well. I love the one I built, it shoots a LOT better than I do currently..

Dan, these ae the ones I have seen. I have never been to Four Seasons, going this week. I go to North Shore often.

North Shore Firearms - $620 - I was in the store and think this is close to the price. Then minus 2%(?) for cash.

Four Seasons Website - $599

would not even know where to start, but I'll look into it

Get yourself a lower receiver from somewheres, and a BCM upper assembly of some sort from www.bravocompanyusa.com. Quality stuff. Not sure I'd build one myself the first time out.

These things have a way of multiplying though. I wonder just what DOES go on behind the door after I lock the safe?

If you're anywhere near Zero Hour Arms in Easton, you should stop in. I don't know of any store in Mass that has a better selection of pre and post ban AR's. I think the price of pre-bans has come down somewhat, and I'd be willing to bet you could pick up a nice Colt (that you could then do anything you want to) for about $1,300.00. Building is a great option, but unless you buy a pre-ban receiver you'll always be limited around the stock and muzzle options.

Thanks for all the suggestions both on the forum and via PM. Travelling to Syracuse for a few days, plenty of hotel time to study. Keep them comming. Getting excited

Get an AR. Every American should own one. You can get a good, solid one for about a grand.

While I wouldn't discount the AR, please remember that not everyone likes them, and I have shot enough M16's, M16A1's and M16A2's to know that this American doesn't want to own one. Your mileage may vary...plus in original form (without the gas piston) they are a bitch to clean.

Happy Birthday WB...I'd opt for something like an M1A but 7.62 mm is a little pricey if you don't reload. You might want to look at AK's, and of course there is the Ruger Mini 14 which seems to have fallen out of favor esp on this Forum (actually a better platform for the 5.56 IMO than the AR Family) but there are those who say that they aren't accurate enough.

I'm betting that you will end up with some kind of an AR platform and then you can make your own decision to keep it and shoot it, sell it, or turn it into a boat anchor. (I'd opt for options 2 and 3, but that's just me).

The ar is an incredibly reliable, accurate, modular, and affordable platform. It is not at all difficult to functionally clean. For a carbine I would recommend a 14.5 inch barrel with a mid length gas system and perm attached comp to bring it to 16. They shoot very smooth and should have no problem out shooting you. I'd recommend going with spikes tactical.

I'd like to hear the argument as to why the mini-14 is a better 5.56 platform.

Why do you say the 14.5" is the way to go? Just curious.

Personally, I'd lean towards a longer barrel.
