Hey guys,

I'm in the market for an entry level bolt action rifle in .308win. I am currently stuck between a Savage 111 trophy hunter and a remington 700 (ADL,BDL,etc). I am leaning heavily towards the savage but if I am not considering a certain bolt gun, I'd appreciate any input before I shell out the money.

What do you want to do with it?
IMO The best "value" rifle is the Savage Axis.
Easy trigger to work on, great barrel
They even have an Axis in .308 that has a threaded barrel.
Mine shoots better than I do.

Problem is that when you go to get anything aftermarket stock, barrel, etc you dont have much to choose from. other than that its alot of gun for the money.

Savage has some features which are better than Rem like barrel nut, floating bolt head, etc. Remington's are nice but If i were you get the Savage or if you want a budget fun go get a Stevens 200 the no frills savage.

I bought the Savage 111 TH package chambered in .308 and I'm quite impressed with it. The Accutrigger is really smooth, the best pull by far out of all my guns. It's a smooth little surprise every time it goes bang. The BDC on the scope really works as advertised.

I have two post 64 Winchester and they are both pretty good guns. The varmint rifle has produced several sub MOA groups at 200 yards. These are mid 90 production.

I've been told that if I buy an axis, that I'd wished I spent just a little extra for the 111...It's going to spend a majority of time as a benchrest shooter but I have a jarhead buddy in Texas that wants me to spend a week on his family ranch for a hunt so I'd like this rifle to be light enough to carry on that hunt but the Remington and Savage 111 both fit that bill.

i think i prefer savage accutriger which is adjustible to standard non-adjustible x-mark that to my knowledge ADL and BDL come with.
The AccuTrigger is the main reason that I am considering the savage... I've heard really good things about it

Don't know how much you want to spend, but the Rem700 5R is fantastic for what it is.
I'd love to pick up a 5R but I'm on a budget

This is the exact setup I am considering

I needed a rifle quick to go to the boss's all expense white tail hunt in Wisconsin. I got the Remington 700 ADL w/scope in .308 from Cabellas for $439.
The scope is junk, the rings are worse. I had them replaced at Powderhorn in Hyannis after shooting several boxes of ammo and being all over the place.
In Wisconsin I got my deer in a snap shot as he was sprinting across a field at 70 yards. The rifle was dead on and immediately dropped the deer. It kicked once I think.
The Rem 700 is a great gun

I have an older Remington 700 BDL (granted, in 30-06, not .308) and I love it. It shoots much more accurately than I do and it's never had a single problem of any kind. It's killed well over 30 deer since I bought it in 1989 and I don't think I've ever even re-adjusted the scope.

I got a chance to shoot a Ruger American and was thoroughly impressed. It was as light as guns you pay extra for the lightness for and it shot better than I did. Its not fancy, but the bolt was smooth and the trigger was good. And you can buy one for $350, and its 100% made in the USA.

I bought a gun at Dicks yesterday and the clerk told me they sold 700s all day long on Friday. BAsically sold every 700 they had in every caliber.

The base model savage will most likely out perform my ability but I'd appreciate any input into whether or not one of the "aftermarket" stocked LE are worth the additional money
