Wondering about a bolt action long range shooting caliber that has these features

Easy to find
Low recoil
Good for 700 yards or more
Less than a 50 cal lol.

Mosin with a break and recoil pad .

1776 gun smith quoted me a stupid low price to install a bull barrel on a mosin for me . So ill assume a break would be dirt cheap to.

You can find deals on the rifles for 200$ or less . 440 rounds 90ish . Recoil pad <50$ .

270 is not a bad choice. 243 isn't either. The problem with low recoil is the lower power part. I would recommend my beloved 3006 but it can kick like a mule on some rifles.

Are you shooting wood or synthetic stock, and are you planing to do sustained (range type shooting) or more one shot (hunting)?

.30-06 is a classic and you can't go wrong so I have to plug it. Can get a bit expensive but nothing beats shooting a nice '03 IMHO. My wife is about 110 wet and she likes it but it does kick the heck out of her (the Garand seems to hurt her more than the '03).

.243 has abotu as much kick as .223 and you can get it in some decent platforms (like the 700) so I would agree with bch1988.

270 Winchester would seem to fit the bill.

That is what I was thinking.

But there is also this... Mossberg & Sons | 27710.

Mossbergs MVP fires 5.56 and takes AR magazines. It should be accurate out to 1000 yards and will eat the same food as your AR with very low recoil.

I have not fired one but reviews are good.

Oh yeah... it's cheap too.

I know my dad has dropped antelope at very long ranges (500+ yards) with his .243. His is a Weatherby. I have a Savage Model 11 in the same caliber but have never hunted out west where long shots like that are more routine.

Low recoil and shooting out to 700 yards is tough combination of requirements. For what purpose?

The best common caliber for that range would likely be the 22-250, but it won't have much energy left at 700 yards.

I like the 6.5mm Mauser myself for relatively light recoil and good ballistic coefficient, but it's by no means common.

How does 308 stack up to 30-06?

Some say 7mm is as good as something like a 308 but lighter recoil.

It doesnt have to have all but a good mix of the features.

Its going to be used on the range with a very big recoil pad lol.

.308 will do it all day long but the recoil nay be much because iirc you are recoil sensitive. if this is just target shooting the 5.56 can do 600 yards 700 will be stretching it a bit, the .243 would be a good compromise between 223 and 308

7MM O8 OR 260 REMINGTON, WHICH IS 6.5 IN A 308 LENGTH CASE. Both are production cartridges. If you aren't going to be carrying it around all day, go heavy in both barrel and stock weight. Shooting off a bench or prone, the more the rifle weighs, the less felt recoil. Just simple laws of physics. I have an ar 10 in 308. The ladies all love it! It has a massive scope, and lead in the buttstock. It weighs 26 lbs with the scope. Felt recoil is less than a 223 AR 15

Easy to find meaning you want to buy ammo on the shelf at Walmart or something else? And good for what at 700 yards? (Targets? Long range hunting?)

Some of the long-range shooters are moving to calibers like the .260 Remington and wildcats in the 6.5 mm. class, not because of recoil, but because of the ballistic properties of the bullets. It can get spendy if you don't reload, though. The heavier the rifle, the lower the felt recoil. So shooting a heavy .308, you won't get thumped as hard as with a lightweight .270 or 7 mm. If you can find a club with active rifle shooters, they're usually happy to let you try their toys.
Or let us know where you found the 700-yard range, and we'll bring lots of rifles for you to try. [smile]

not perfect way to compare but will give you an idea of recoil

Really cool info. Thank you.

To the OP, didn't I see a thread that you had posted recently about recoil with some pretty nasty bruising pictures? What caliber were you shooting? I can't remember but I thought it was an AR?

I don't want to be a wet blanket but .243. .270, 7mm or .308 will deliver a lot more recoil than an AR. And there are many AR's that can reach out to 1000 yards, especially if you are just punching paper or ringing steel.

yup.. i used a pad from a tempur-pedic mattress in between me and the rifle and it worked very well to stop the recoil hit to my shoulder. thanks to F2blica i had very little red marks , and i could shoot the ak, ar, and 308 all day lol

yeh i love the heavy bull barrel bolt action's like i shot that day, but i will admit, without that temper-pedic mattress between me and the gun.. not pleasant at all to shoot for me..

so i was trying to find a nice caliber with a little less recoil, but could reach out a lot farther than my AK accurately out to 700 yards easy. thanks to this forum.. looks like i need to shoot a .243, and a 7mm-08.
