I was wondering if I could get some opinions to help me decide between a bolt action or an ar for target.
I am trying to decide between a colt hbar a3 elite and either a savage or remington bolt action.
It will be used for target shooting out to two hundred yards.
The savage will be either a 10 series or twelve series and the remington will be a variation of the 700.

the remington will be a variation of the 700.
Both are fine choices. In any case, you are talking about name brand, classic guns and can't go wrong (though many would argue the Colt is not the best AR out there, particularly if they are still using the non-standard takedown pin sizes). Four Seasons has the Remington SPS variant of the 800 for $499.95 which is a heck of a deal.

The recent SPS Tactical in .223 is reported to have a twist rate of 1/9. Earlier .223 tacticals, and the .308 version, are 1/12.

I checked out the sps but the twist was 1/12 and I am leaning towards a 1/9
1/12 would be about right for a .308. If you are looking at a .223, I would suggest you consider a 1/8 rather than 1/9. 1/8 will function nicely with a wider range of rounds than the 1/9, although the 1/9 might be ever so slightly better for the relatively lightweight (55 gr) projectiles.

The reason for the 1/9 is that is all i can seem to find in a hbar without going nuts in the money dept.
If you ever want to see what you get for "going nuts" getting one from JP, let me know and you can test drive a few. I also will probably be bringing a few up to the Four Seasons BBQ.

lol, When is the four seasons bbq by the way. As for the rifle I have been in there twice this week trying to figure out which one and even stopped by collectors in between. The main reason I am getting it is my son wants to shoot rifle. if i cant make up my mind ill probably tell him to wait for the spring and then Ill just order a 1911Dk.

Rob is spot on.

as for the twist rate(s)

i've tested my AR's and Savage 10 in .223

two of my AR's have 1:7 and one has 1:9

my Savage is 1:9

1:9 or 1:8 would be more versatile IMO. my 1:7's like expensive 69gr and 77gr Hornandy... Black Hills ect.

its hard to find at times... [wink]
