I'm just flabbergasted by the cost of most of the BUIS units. The MI units are expensive, YHM units are expensive, the Troys are even more so... There's something about blowing $160 minimum on a front and rear sight that just seems wrong.

With that said, I am leaning toward the Midwest Industries sights as they look to be well made and low profiled

Does anyone have any suggestions? The primary sight on this will be a EOTech.

Do you need front and rear sights?
If not, keep the front stock and just go with a fold down rear.
See how it works for you with the Eotech.
If you find the front sight bothersome when using the scope, then and only then think about replacing it.

I think mine is a Bushmaster, from before they started selling A.R.M.S. BUIS.

I'm going front and rear. I don't want to go with the fixed front because I'm putting the permanent brake on it and it would be a huge PITA to have to cut the brake off to switch it later.

You can get a barrel extension wrench from brownells. That would allow you to put the barrel in a block and then remove the extension and pull everything off backwards after you remove the barrel.

YMMV,

I'm going with the MI front folder as well as my Bushmaster has a tilted front sight The Troy is suppose to be the best but the $$$ factor is a bit much.

I have an ARMs #40. I forget what I paid for it, but it's a well built unit and is more than adequate for my needs.

Doing that would require resetting the headspace, resetting the timing of the gas port, plus the extension is torqued at something like 100' lbs.

(edit: correction... extension torque is more like 150' lbs).

Not something I'd want to mess around with.

Stay away from the YHM, and the MI and spend the money and get the TROY! You will not find a better BUIS set out there I have a rear and you are getting your money's worth for certian. If you are only running an EoTech then there should be no issue with using the standard FSB thats how I ran my carbine when I had an EoTech and thats how I am running it currently with my Aimpoint.

If you decide to go witha lopro gas block make sure the GB is pinned in place, or you will have gas system issues!

I thought he was just trying to get the FSB off? Now that I think about it, it probably wouldn't work anyways because the barrel reinforce is slightly larger than the opening in the FSB.

Post ban stuff is such a PITA.

If the next Troy group buy goes off before I make the purchase, I'll probably go with the Troy depending on the discount, but until then I have to stick with the MI. The $100 price differential is pretty big.

The perfect response to this question.

Thanks - I think those who have used them or compared them to other units can see the difference. Some things are just better - LaRue scope mounts come to mind. Troy is just a well-thought design that is built like a tank.

Vellenuve: I understand budget, (trust me). I would suggest you cut corners somewhere to fund the extra purchase for a Troy. "Buy it once" comes to mind...If you're going for a no FSB build, then you want to put the best sights on that you can - MI/YHM are not it. Do a Google search and type in: "YHM BUIS wobble"...See what comes up....

I know the YHMs aren't the best, but from what I understand the MIs are very well made and solid.

The Troys may be the best, but for something I might use once (for sight in purposes), I can't justify $200.

Like I said, if I find a really good deal that brings a Troy set near the price of an MI set (~160-200) then I'll probably jump on them.

Likely no Troy group buy until the fall - possibly a G&R buy upcoming. If your price range is (~ 160-200), the Troy set is $249.00. You can also check the classifieds at ARF and M4C - I have seen them on there for much less. In any case, one of the beauties of life is choices - so good luck with whatever you choose to do with your build.

Yeah, basically my main point is getting something that is solid and reasonably precise. Most of the parts I'm planning on using are MI.
