So I found a revolver I've been looking for. Reasonably priced, owner is not gouging. I call them, tell them I'd like to buy, but need to do an FFL transfer... no dice! Bummer.

How often have other NES posters run into this sort of thing?

This is gun law 101, per federal laws you cannot buy a handgun directly anywhere other than your state of residence. If you're looking/buying out of state you have to inbound the gun through an MA FFL. Check ahead of time with the MA FFLs you are trying to use to make sure it will get through the compliance blockade. Every dealer is different.
