Here's an interesting one. I was just filling out the form for my C&R, when I came to the field for the name of the police chief. My town doesn't have one right now. He resigned and hasn't been replaced. Should I use the sheriff instead? Leave it blank?

They ask for the "Name of Chief Law Enforcement Officer" so that would be the highest ranking member of the police force, even if he doesn't have an official "Chief" title.

Call the PD and ask who's the acting chief. Or better yet go to the PD, ask, write his name down and hand him his copy.

This, I did this in Bristol when they had a new acting chief a few years back. I'm sure the officer at the front desk filed it properly, in the circular filer.....

Folks, don't make this into more than it is.

You don't need to do anything more than mail it to the PD with "Attn: Chief of Police".

If the chief just quit, its their responsibility to forward it to whomever is the acting chief.

If your town has a constabulary with a resident state trooper, it will go to the first selectman who will then send it down to the trooper.

Either way, ITS NOT YOUR PROBLEM. You have a duty to mail a notification. Once you do that, you are done.

You don't need to know who the chief is.

Thats my point. Address it to "Chief of Police" and be done with it.

I "think" that you are wrong. IIRC (too lazy to look) my renewal forms (and thus I would expect that the first issue forms too) asked for a NAME and a TITLE of the CLEO on the form to BATFE. Your solution works for the envelop you put it in and any note, but may not make BATFE happy.

In any event, most discussing it here seem to be too afraid to pick up a phone, call the business number at the PD and simply ask the name/spelling and title (if an acting chief) so they can do this right. It must be too scary for them to make the call . . . just do it from a burner phone if you are paranoid.

Len, I don't recall what the Form 7 asks for.
You may be right.

But the letter to the chief certainly doesn't need anything more than "Attn Chief of Police"

You are correct. The form 7 asks for the CLEO's name and address.

It amazes me that people are afraid to just pick up the phone and ask.

I remember the first time I was completing an ATF Form 1 to "make" a short barreled rifle.
I was young and dumb. I asked an older friend a question about a question on the form.

His answer was to give me that ATF NFA branch phone number and told me to call them and ask. Hmm.
In 3 minutes I got my answer. The nice lady from West VA was so sweet I thought she was going to send me some home made cookies with my stamp.
