I just picked up a nice S&W model 28-2 as a birthday present to myself. The price was right and it has some trigger work done ( soooo smooooth! ) I've been reading that the were the "value" 27-2 no polished bluing ect.... but otherwise mechanical the same.

So, I was wondering if anyone could tell me the year of MFG. The serial # is S322XXX
Its pinned and recessed, which i guessed stopped after '82 (?) as a cost savings.

Any idea on book value as well, not that it matters much as I already bought it.

Edit: and is the model 28 considered a "N" frame or full size?

Sticky: How to Identify/Date a S&W
http://www.northeastshooters.com/vbulletin/showthread.php/68254-How-to-Identify-Date-a-S-amp-W

S305,000 – S329,999……Late 1968 – Early 1969

The 28 is an N frame. There is no such thing as 'full size'. The only thing bigger than an N frame is the X frame of the SW 460 and 500 magnums.

The 28 is a 'utility' grade 27, which was highly polished blue. and was designated the 'Highway Patrolman' on the barrel.

The 28 brings less than a 27 but prices are going up. The prices vary, depending on condition and barrel length.

A 28 in good condition is probably in the $350-475 range...maybe more with box, tools and papers.
