(WWJ) A young man who allegedly struggled with and fired shots at Detroit police was shot and killed by officers on Friday.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig says the shooting happened on San Juan Street near McNichols on the city's northwest side, at around 12:30 p.m.

Police officers, who were investigating a weekend shooting that left three people dead and five wounded at block party, were arresting one person when another man approached.

Craig said there was a struggle between an officer and the second man, who it turned out was armed.

"(The suspect) then removed a small caliber, .22 caliber blue steel semi-automatic pistol and began to fire a number of rounds at the officer over his shoulder," Craig told reporters. "As that was occurring the officer pushed him away, and that's when the additional officers, fearing for their life — the fact that he was actively shooting — they fired several rounds, striking the suspect."

The suspect was pronounced dead at a local hospital. No officers were injured.

The weapon allegedly used by the suspect, along with several bullet casings were recovered at the scene.

Detroit police release video of man firing at cops before officers fatally shoot him

“It’s simply a miracle he wasn’t struck in the head,” the Detroit police chief said of the officer, who was unharmed.

Newly released body and dash-camera footage by Detroit police in a deadly officer-involved shooting shows the suspect fired at police first before officers fatally shot him.

The death of 20-year-old Hakeem Littleton Friday sparked protests throughout the city, but Police Chief James Craig said the video puts rumors that Littleton was unarmed to bed.

Craig said at a news conference following the shooting that Littleton was no more than 3 feet away from officers when he suddenly pulled a 0.25 caliber semi-automatic pistol out of his pocket and began shooting at officers as they faced each other.
