Colossal AR Failure

Looks an awful like a .300 blackout round was fired in a 5.56 chamber...
also, why an adjustible gasblock on an unsuppressed non sbr? wanted the gucci stuff? His rifle reeks of wish parts.

Im not coming down on JP, they do make good stuff...It’s just the design of the gas block is just kind of shit..The way it mounts the way it adjusts. Most people get these adjustable gas blocks and never even use the adjustment and they get stuck. It just wouldn’t be my first pick.
I put an adjustable gas block on one of my builds, and I've never had to adjust it, waste of money IMO.

Just in case there is some newb watching this and it is not already 100% obvious- do not turn an AR so you can look directly into the ejection port while shooting. Definitely do not do this if the gun is having problems, but you should not be doing it anyway. The stupid- it hurts!

Unless you're a lefty. Then you're pretty much screwed already.

If only there was a fundamental responsibility
to look at the ammo headstamp
after blowing up someone else's gun
before you run to post nonsense on YoutUbe.

Also, note the ongoing evasion of actual responsibility.
"Obviously .300 Blackout was loaded into the gun.
How that happened is a mystery".

If he wants to know how that happened,
all he needs to do is to look into a mirror.

Funny you should mention that about headstamps. When I first got a 300, I was happily converting 5.56 brass into 300 BLK. Right until I learned that a 300 would chamber and try to fire in a 5.56 barrel. Ruh-roh... Shot what I had reloaded, turned the brass into 22 TCM and made damn sure to use 300 BLK headstamp brass from then on.

Recall that I'm so naive that I had never heard of .300 Blackout
until I went to my first (NH) NES GTG at Molly's, and @Malodave
(or @Golddiggie ?) was handing out .300 Blackout marker bands as karma.
@strangenh

I'm still not much more advanced,
but I no longer think they're wrist-bands
for caliber virtue-signalers.

Although maybe the videographer/shade-tree gunsmith
should be forced to wear one as a wrist-band.

ETA: @Malodave note @Golddiggie

BTW, we have the (Massified version) of that rifle,
and I was chagrined to learn that using a sling Old School on an AR
moves the point of aim.(*) So in theory we're prospects for replacement
with a free-floating handguard. But I've easily done 3x the research
for if/how to add a bipod to the AR-556
as I have on handguard replacement.

But I'm not mooning after tweaks like screwing around with gas blocks.
So this whole episode does still leave me asking, "but why?".

(*) I was at 4S 80 minutes after getting Carl's EMail on Marsha Sales Day.
My due diligence consisted of verifying via smartphone Intarweb search
while waiting on line (with my deli ticket in hand) that the AR-556
would eat both 5.56 and .223. I think that was the totality of it.
No ragrets.

Yeah, didn't hear a lot of apologies to JP and he was dumping on them hard for his own nonchalantness
In These Troubling Times,
if JP is selling everything they can manufacture,
maybe it's the lesser evil to grit their teeth
and power through the defamation.

I'm not saying that's just; I'm jus' sayin'.

Changing out to a freefloat on a massified gun can be annoying to say the least. Because the barrel nut is behind a pinned/welded muzzle device, the easiest route is ofthen through a second complete upper.

Maybe in 300AAC? [rofl2]

Sorry that was wrong link.

Cold weather and high round count is all I could chalk it up to.

Yes I was shooting reloads.
Tracers. I had shot 6300 of that exact reload before the blowup. I was using WC846, which is impossible to overcharge with that bullet. The case capacity is lower than the max charge with the bullet.. I tried as a test afterwards and couldn't get a round to seat to mag length that had a max charge for a 62gr load. The tracers are super long.

Not a squib. I hit the target before the failure. Pic of barrel with obstruction marked and a tracer round on top.

I chalked it up to the temp 11F and a rifle with 17k rounds thru it that I hadn't done any real inspection on for a while. In the thread my guess was the barrel lugs or bolt lugs were damaged as I had a failure to chamber earlier in the session.

It is also possible that I had a case neck separation and somehow the next round still chambered creating an obstruction. I was not as careful with my case prep then as I am now.

In the end the rifle detonated in the safest way possible. Not a scratch on me and like I said earlier the lower was 100% operational. I'm also still using that LaRue mount and Leupold scope. I just plopped a new upper on and that was it.

I think it’s respectful he came back and admitted it. But it does make me question his “Gun smithing abilities”. Not that he made the mistake...Although this is a pretty common known event. That in itself is why I’m not a 300 blackout fan. That I don’t have a suppressor.

I will surprise people are in a little more positive about adjustable gas block’s. I literally have a pelican case full of buffers, springs, and random spacers. I really find the adjustable gas block useful for fine tuning..

But i run a lot of less common set ups..Having the option of leaving the gas block set at whatever setting is appropriate could help not having to remember which buffer and spring goes with we each upper..

But I probably don’t know what I’m talking about...There’s probably better ways to achieve the goals

Still have some left. They are a Safety Measure as you do not want to put .300 Blackout in a .223 Gun

So, I have a .300 blackout pistol. And several AR's in .223 wylde. I only put blackout ammo in aluminum 20 round mags, the poodle rounds go in Pmags. Just my method.
