I'm new to 1911's so go easy on me. I'm sure I'm going to butcher the terminology. I'm considering a Colt 1991 Commander. I've spoken to a few people who say, "Great gun, buy it". Other's say, "Stay away". The reason being the 1991's have a. "Plastic" internal part that can cause the gun to fire if struck or dropped ??. Sear, Hammer block ???

What say you ?

Here is another vote for "buy it". I have a 1991 A1. It has a plastic trigger and plastic mainspring housing from the factory. Neither one has caused a problem. I don't know what other plastic part theere is that would cause it to be unsafe.

I have no specific knowledge about the Colt 1991s, but both triggers and mainspring housings are easily replaced and replacement parts are widely available from multiple sources, for comparatively short money.

From the Lessons Learn the Hard Way Department:

1) Before swapping MSP, remove the grips. Not strictly necessary for access, but it is too easy to mar them if you don't.

2) Before removing the MSP retaining spring, use a big rubber band to hold the grip safety down. This prevents the grip safety and sear spring from flopping around and makes sliding up the new MSP so much easier and faster.

I've had a 1991A1 since 1994, and I love it. I did replace the mainspring housing with a parkerized arched housing. Not only was I not crazy about the plastic, but I wanted it to have more of a 1911A1 appearance. as described above, very easy to do, and functionality has been flawless with this pistol.

I bought a Colt Commander 1991 as a wedding present to myself. That was the agreement I had with my wife. She could register for whatever crap she wanted, but I was gonna take all the cash we got and buy myself a Colt. It's been an awesome firearm which I carry frequently.

that is win-win right there! love it.

I had the chance to buy a 1991 at great price but passed on it. been kicking mysel ever since, my vote is buy it

The " plastic" has been used for years by Colt. They make the Delta and the Combat Elite with plastic MSH's. I actually like it for the weight savings. They hold up very well. The trigger too, which is black. You have to spend some $ to get an STI trigger in plastic or um carbon fiber. I have never seen a failure due to the material of these parts.

I've detail stripped 1991 several times. I knew the mainspring housing was plastic, but I honestly never noticed that the trigger was plastic.
