Hi I recently purchased an AR-15 from a dealer in Larence MA. I have some questions as I am a pistol guy and this is my first long arm in over 20 years.
The rifle was delivered MA compliant, my brother (Who is a LEO, and ex army) took it to the range and fired it as I am only a member of a pistol range. Without the flash suppressor it was to say the least LOUD. The barrell lenght is 16".

1.) can I legally add a flash suppressor ?
If so can the barrel be cut and will the suppressor be considered to make up the 16"? WHo could do the work ?
2.) I was told the stock can not be modified from the dealer. Can it be modified by me ?

Any help will be appreciatiated.

Thansk,

Mike.

the stock can be modified, but if you use a collapsible one, once you find the setting you want it must be pinned in that position.

You have to be aware of the minimum overall length of the gun when doing this.

I am not following MA laws, so someone will have to correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think suppressors are allowed in MA

Is it post-ban or pre-ban. If it came without a flash suppressor, I strongly suspect that it is post-ban. In that case:

1) No, you can not add a flash suppressor. That would be a felony.
2) You could have a muzzle brake permanently attached to the barrel. Any decent gunsmith can do this for you, including David Santurri in North Attleborough.
3) You can modify the stock as you wish. What you can't do, however, is change to a folding or collapsible stock (unless you pin it, which defeats the purpose).
4) If you think it is loud now, just wait until you add a muzzle brake. That will make it LOUD.

I think he may mean can he order a callapsible stock and pin it himself and the answer to that is NO. You can't. It has to be done prior to your purchase. I THINK you could if you're an FFL but I'm not sure on that one.

If he bought the gun with a fixed stock, he could buy a collapsible stock, pin it, and then put it on the rifle.

Of course, that is just completely pointless, since a collapsible stock is more expensive than a fixed stock, is not as strong, and gives a worse cheek weld. But people want them because they look cool [thinking]

Could he with a post ban? I thought that would come under constructive possession? (farkin' laws are so confusing you don't know whether to defecate or go blind).

M1911 is correct about the break. I had a Colt Ar15 without a muzzle break and it was OK. I added a m uzzle break and it became VERY loud. The .223 doesn't have much recoil. I'd skip the break. I believe you can have a flash suppressor if it is not removable and doesn't have a bayonet lug.

No, you can't. You get one "evil" feature on a post-ban gun. On the AR15, that "evil" feature is the pistol grip. A flash suppressor is a second "evil" feature and two "evil" features makes it a dangerous, banned semi-automatic assault weapon.

You can add permanently attached muzzle brake, but no flash suppressor.

Isn't the detachable magazine one of the "evil" features as well?

either way he can't have a flash or sound suppressor on a post ban in MA, I assumed it was a flash suppressor in his OP, but either way it's a no no.

Have we reached a consensus on a pinned stock yet? Why wouldn't you be able to put a compliant post ban stock on a post ban lower after you got it home, just as long as it met the minimum length requirement and it remained in shoulder fire rifle configuration, as opposed to a AR Pistol type configuration, which opens up a whole other discussion.

I know a folding or functional sliding stock is a no no

He did emphasize loud in his post so he may mean a sound suppressor.
What he wrote was:

I could be wrong, but I interpret that to be a flash suppressor.

I am pretty sure you can have a collapsible stock, as long as it is pinned. You can have a permanently attached muzzle break but no flash hider pinned or not. If you have a pre-ban lower, you can have all of those features all at the same time. Makes lots of sense. Magazines that hold >10 rounds are ok as long as they where made before the Ban.

Ugh. All of this is giving me a headache. Let's iterate this clearly.

You may have any one of the following in a post-ban AR with a detachable magazine.
Pistol Grip
Flash Suppressor/Threaded Muzzle
Bayonet Lug
Grenade Launcher
Folding/Collapsible Stock

Generally, this one feature is the pistol grip. But if you can eliminate the conspicuous pistol grip:

Then you can add a flash suppressor if you so wish.

Thanks for all the help guys, This state blows. Yes the weapon is post ban,new from colt.

So I take the following:
Can add a collapsable stock but it must be pinned.
Can add a muzzle brake but not a flash suppressor.

Can you explain the difference between the muzzle brake and the flash suppressor.

Yup.

A muzzle brake reduces recoil and/or muzzle rise. A flash suppressor reduces muzzle flash.

Muzzle brakes typically direct some of the gases to the rear, which is why they increase the noise.
