Long story short : I bought a Pre Ban Colt Lightweight (16" carbine with a fixed stock) out of state and did a FFL transfer. I've been trying to get ahold of someone at Colt so I can get a letter to verify that it is a Preban (the Serial in the SL 4000s). I keep getting a busy signal whenever I call customer service 1800-962-COLT. Do I really have to pay $100-200 to Colt Archives and wait up to 90 days for this letter?

Thanks for any guidance you can lend me. I did try to use the search function and couldn't find anything that matched my query. I do apologize if my search was inadequate and this topic has been covered numerous times already.

Thank you guys! Do you know if it's worth the extra $100 for faster shipping? Any RW experiences of how quickly/long it took you to get your Colt Archives letter?

Mine was 90 days at least. At least they refunded me when they found out they didn’t any info for me.

I tried to get a letter from them in ~2010. The guy on the phone verified 2 rifles of mine over the phone with the serials. I asked for the paperwork to be sent out. He asked for my CC information. I gave it.

Nothing ever came and nothing was charged.

Why not just go here, you can check the s/n right online:

So they didn't find the S/N in their database?

Some Serial numbers arent in that search

Does anyone know a FFL that can verify its authenticity and wont need a damn letter?

The seller bought it ‘91 and the FFL that sold it to him is willing to do a receipt.

I dont want this AR in limbo for 90 days and never get a letter.

Obiwan youre my only hope...

I was trying to go through micro arc welding (formerly Pullman arms) because of Pullman’s activism and Im a Woosta rez.

She wants a letter from Colt to prove its a preban.

Im going to find a different FFL that can verify authenticity.

You mention The seller bought it ‘91 and the FFL that sold it to him is willing to do a receipt.

If that's the case, then the original FFL should also have the 4473. They may or may not be willing to give out a copy though. I would think a receipt would be good enough for Pullman?

If not, then find a different FFL.

I tried to get a records look up for a 1911 from Colt, but it never came. I followed up a few times over the years, but they could never produce any paperwork.

I can’t find their response, but it was to the effect of “Sorry we couldn’t find anything and you won’t be charged.” Light on specifics. Bummer too because I was trying to figure out if my Diamondback had shipped from the factory in its non-standard configuration (narrow hammer, target stocks, Elliason rear sight).

Check your PMs, I sent you an FFL

This isn't 100% clear to me but I think you're trying to say the FFL you're using won't transfer the rifle without proof that it's preban. If it's sitting at the Mass. FFL now then WTF did thay take the transfer from the seller's FFL? Find another FFL. When I lived in Mass. I did a transfer of a pre 1994 AR through a NH FFL and that went OK. This shouldn't be so difficult. According to the list posted by JDL (if that's accurate) it's a preban piece.

Good luck.

The woman who works there has an interesting take on what documentation is acceptable.

Four Season for the win guys! They can verify it's authenticity on their own. Phew I'm so glad it was 40$ instead of 200$ and *maybe* Colt will give me a letter in 90 days lol.

Merry Christmas and thank you so much for your help guys.
