cnyankee,

I am NOT an expert on CT gun law, so I caution you to check out the authoritative sources before venturing there:

- CT Gun Laws: http://www.cga.ct.gov/2005/pub/Chap529.htm

- Coalition of CT Sportsmen: http://www.ctsportsmen.com/

- Unofficial compendium of gun laws: http://www.handgunlaw.us/

Now for some "personal opinions":

- Shortly after I joined the PD I bought a Colt Trooper as my duty gun. I had wanted to bring it to Colt in Hartford to have them do a trigger job on it. I was cautioned (by knowledgeable people) that even though I was a PO, this could be risky to travel in CT with a handgun and no CT CCW. I thus never did it. This was late 1970s-early 1980s.

- A year or two ago I noticed an interesting defensive handgun course being offered in CT. I then checked the CT laws and queried the CT sponsors. Confirmed my suspicions that ONLY under the very narrowest circumstances could I safely bring my own guns to such a course. IIRC, CT law ONLY allows unlicensed non-residents to bring guns to an NRA (or one other nationally recognized org) match! The CT sponsor even provides their guns for the visiting trainer to use in the course!! [Contrast: In MA, any "match" will do, so we use this loophole for Jim Conway's NEShooters.com training by providing such a letter to Non-Residents.]

- Some long guns are banned in CT. Make sure what you bring is OK there.

Good luck and I hope this is helpful.
