I bought a rifled barrel for my 870 and I got it less than 2 weeks ago. I brought it to the range once and it's been in my safe since then.

I pulled it out the other day, and I see this...

I can't beleive it. First of all, it looks like mold or salt corrosion. It happened, as you can see, right at the seam of the chamber and barrel itself. I havent contacted midway or the manufacturer yet (mossberg) to see what my options are.

What you guys think? ever seen this?

Looks like it was in contact with a corrosive surface at that point. I don't think Midway replaces barrels once they're fired.

I've seen something similar. I believe it has to do with the way the bluing salts were neutralized (or should I say not neutralized). I had a similar situation, though not as bad with a Winchester shotgun.

When I seen the title I thought "typical rustington barrel" All my remingtons rust up if not watched and checked, especially where ever you may grab the steel with your hands/fingers......yours is not rusty thats rotted!!

Will they give you a store credit instead of a wait.

actually I've seen something similar happen before. those white areas are blueing salts. If you rinse that area under running water they will wash away. It looks like the blueing salts solution got into a solder seam between 2 pieces and were not properly washed out. when they were exposed to moisture in the air , the salts sucked moisture from the air and expanded back out of the seam again. Unfortunately, there is so much moisture in the orange area that I would guess that a little rust developed there. I would be more worried about the fact that there is a seam there at all. Most barrels are solid at that point with no seam.

The photo seems to reveal that spot where you musta swiped your finger across the spot, thinking "WTF is this"?

I could see myself doing that, then looking at the residue on my finger and saying, "WTF is THIS"?

It's a Mossberg barrel.

It wouldnt surprise me one bit if the same manufacture makes both mossburg/remington barrels??????

Haha, that's exactly what that is.

So, any suggestions for a better rifled barrel? I'm not sure I'd want this barrel again. I got it bc it was the least expensive rifled barrel with a canti scope I could find. I figured mossberg would be respectable quality. Most of the other barrels I see are $300 plus for anythign that isn't remington or mossberg.

And yes, they will give me a credit if I choose.
