I've been shooting corrosive ammo through my AK74 for the past 2 months and I've cleaned it as soon as I get home. The bore and gas chamber are spotless but there is some rusting going on in the threads of my muzzle brake and the front of my barrel. Any suggestions on how to clean this area better? It is really hard to get into that area because my brake is welded on.

Hot water or windex then blow dry and use a water displacement agent like WD-40 then lube.

You've got to rinse out the corrosive mercuric salts well then oil it.

yep you better believe it. there is a reason why ak74 brakes are made removable.
but if you are stuck with ma-compliant version then as previous poster says - plenty of hot water to rinse out, dry and then wd-40 heck out of it

Thanks, I'll order some kroil for the rust. Normally I use hot water, wd40, and blow dry the gas chamber & bore (CLP also goes down the bore). I'll be more carefully and start doing that with the muzzle brake too.

I'd go with scalding hot water and flush the hell out of the muzzle, then follow up with some compressed air. If you don't have a compressor get one of the cans of air used for blowing off PC keyboards and electronics. Reason I like using hot water is because as the metal heats up it dries the water pretty quick.

Its always good to keep hard to get at areas coated with quality oil.

Personally, if it were my gun, after I cleaned it really well as suggested above, I'd dunk the break et. al. in some eds red and let it dry for a couple hours and repeat. The kero etc seems good at getting in tight places like threads and when it evaporates it leaves some of the other stuff behind. Not sure it would help, but it might fill the threads with enough stuff to keep other crap out or at least leave a nice barrier in there.
