My preferences:

MA compliant. Could be pre-owned but in very good condition, or (preferably) new.

Full-sized 5" 1911

Stainless frame, preferably "melted" (de-horned).

Stainless or black (two-tone) slide.

Skeletonized trigger with a good feel. 4 - 4.5 lb (?)

Night sights

Checkered grip and mainspring housing

Nice wood grips. I understand this is easily remedied, but if I don't have to swap them out I'd rather not.

I'd probably look for a .22LR conversion (Marvel Unit 2?) for it, too.

So is it a Ruger SR1911? Sig TTT or STX? SW1911 E series? Used Colt or Kimber? Other? What would something like that go for at a semi-custom shop such as Remsport?

What sucks, is that I *have* the money for it, but if I got another gun right now it would be to the detriment of some other home projects (carpeting, kitchen floor, insulation & draft sealing, etc...). So it'll be next year probably.

But it's nice to dream and search the Internet, in the meantime...

Your best bet is to build your self your own from remsport parts. Its gonna be kinda hard to get every thing you want. I bought a Remington r1 as my first gun and plan to use it to build up from, if not I'm going with remsport.

Send it!

Ruger or S&W E-Series for me. Personally I'd steer clear of the Sig.........superfluous firing pin blocks & "non-standard" slide profiles. I've also seen a stainless model with some rust spots on the slide, which was not encouraging.....

Honestly the MA compliant thing kills it for me.

I held the sig, I just didn't fall in love with it like I thought I would. The ruger looks good and is at a pretty sweet price point. But... For me, I would like something not in stainless.

My father in law let me borrow his Kimber custom II and despite people's hatred for kimber, has run flawlessly and I shoot it better than my Glocks.

If I don't buy the kimber from him, I will be hunting cause I want a Springfield range officer.

Unfortunately, the Springfield is not MA compliant.

Remsport makes good parts...for other builders wink....

The frame and slide need to be fit.
Most people can do that on there own. Mainly working the action to break it in. The barrel needs to be fit too but even the drop in ones need to be checked there fit right.

The ejector and plunger tube on the frame can be a pain but if you go with remsport they can do that for you.

You'd be better off having some one fit the barrel and barrel bushing , stake the plunger, press the ejector in for you.

All the parts in the slide ,don't really have to be fit. Putting a 1911 slide together is easier then putting a ar lower togarher. Just buy and install. No special tools needed. I can email you some PDFs of a book that 1911 guys consider the holy bible to 1911's .

You can get a drop in trigger group but even those might need some fitting. If you don't know what your doing don't gun smith them your self . You can make the 1911 go full auto by mistake.

What I did when I built one for my friends was buy all the parts put it together in about a hour. Then function checked it . went to the rang . Loaded one round fired. Loaded two. Loaded 3 ,4 ,5,6,7,8 etc.. Then I just told my buddy if he didn't like the trigger bring it to a smith to get it tuned up.

If you wanted to try your hand and not spend a lot of cash. You could get every thing from sarco minus the frame sent to your house and have the frame sent to a FFl for like 350$ last time I checked.

1911frames are not like ar's at all. I bought my ar lower last night and put it together with a hockey puck ,a razor blade and a bic lighter... Lol

1911's need some parts fitted... Keep in mind, if you want crazy tight groups you might see more failures , if you want a work horse that goes bang 100% the time it might rattle like a baby's toy lol. And only do 2 inch groups ...

hit send by mistake so I fixed as much as my spelling grammar as I could.

Send it!

Perhaps it's just me but, any gun with external ejector instead of an INTERNAL extractor is not a real 1911

That is beyond dispute, as stated.
So since the original 1911 did not have adjustable sights, any one with them is not a true 1911 right?
John M. Browning used the external extractor in his next gun the HP because he saw the advantage of a self adjusting extractor after he created the 1911, he would approve of them on the 1911 I think.

The Range Officer is a gorgeous 1911 and competes with the SR1911 IMO. I really like the Springfield but I am a big Ruger guy and will buy it once it becomes readily available. I'm glad you found that the Kimber ran good, but be weary of problems down the line with high round count and with parts that ate expensive and hard to find. Kimbers look real pretty but I have read more horror stories to keep me far away from them. I have no problem spending $1300 for a 1911, but I want it to be damn near perfect and to my liking. The SR1911 does this for me and leaves a ton of room for an ammo can full of .45 :)

The hp was a what came out when jmb had his hands tied, because everything he invented for the 1911, colt owned :).
I'm just messing with you.
The m1911 had adjustable sights you just needed a hammer....

You can't really beat newer 1911 around the price of the ruger. Like the last guy said leave a lot of room for ammo . I went for the Remington r1 cause it has the smaller safety's etc that I wanted for ccw.

I have the Ruger SR1911. I love it...if your ever heading to the braintree rifle and pistol club or in the area Ill let you shoot it.

I have a Remington R1 talo, and for the 625 I paid it's a very nice 1911. For some of the extras the R1 enhanced is a awesome 1911 for the money about 800ish

I went with the Remington r1 enhanced... Absolutely love it!!

I was considering the Ruger, but once I held the r1 enhanced... It was the one for me.

Wasn't being serious, just poking fun at the ejector/extractor confusion.

Beautiful. But is it like the old Ford Model T's, in that you can get it any color you want, so long as it's black?

I have an all-black handgun already (M&P9c), and really want a stainless, or two-tone 1911.

Edit - I checked the Remington website, and the 'enhanced' model comes in only all-black. They do make a stainless 1911, but it's not the 'enhanced' model with all its tweaks.

So after much wrangling, I *thought* I had narrowed down my choice to the 'base' E-Series Smith & Wesson model 108482. But nobody had one in-stock. Stopped in to Four Seasons on Saturday afternoon (at 3:15, I took #111, and they were waiting on #93) and saw they had the Sig TTT in-stock.

This is a model (this, or the STX) which I had considered before, but then zeroed in on the E-Series for a bit. I really love the look of the reverse two-tone. It came with the Tritium night sights, which I'd have needed to move up to the SC or TA version of the E-Series.

It also looks great with the Advantage Arms .22LR target conversion kit on it.
